Haha I guess I was assuming that since Hawaii is part of the U.S. you can DIY by hiring your own movers? I wasn't 100 percent on that. Thanks for cairifying. You always have the best information!

Single sailors E-4 and below must live in the barracks in Hawaii.  hey cannot receive BAH unless the barracks fill up, then the guys who having been there longest will get to move out first.  He should ask his sponsor what the most current policy is, but that's the way  it has been for quite a while.

E-5 and above, or E-4 with more than four years are eligible to receive BAH and COLA in Hawaii.

We had our car shipped to Hawaii (ages and ages ago).  Took forever and they do not handle them gently.  He might ask his sponsor if departing sailors sell their base beater cars cheaply to other sailors. I know this was standard practice in Japan where most American cars were just a nightmare.  A little googling looking for first hand experiences with car shipping should be useful.  I'd say no if it was a car he cares about.

LOL, you cannot do a DITY to Hawaii, but he is eligible for a pack out.  Bear in mind, he may be living in the barracks.  I'd ship a bike and any beach gear he may have.  A motorcycle is perfect in Hawaii, and goes as household goods.  He should call PPO (personal property office) and ask how to set it up.

Haha oh my gosh, for some reason I thought you said Virginia. My mistake. I guess when I was skiming through your post, my mind just honed in on the Virginia part. Well, as someone that just went through the PCS process, I can help.

Gloria: He can ship his car to Hawaii and the Navy will reimburse him for it. Same with the contents of his apartment. That is assuming that he plans to still live off base in Hawaii? If not, then best to store it or sell it. Now if he plans to do a DIY move, what they do is they give you a portion of the moving costs up front, and the rest when you turn in your reciepts. Just make sure he gets the weight of the truck before he puts his stuff in there and after. Let us know if you have any more questions (:

Actually he's stationed at Sugar Grove, which is in WV. Harrisonburg is an hour away from Sugar Grove. We're quite a ways away from each other if you are by NOB!
Comment by Jess_0411 on May 23, 2011 at 3:05pm
Haha sorry! NOB (Norfolk Naval Base), Langley, and Portsmouth are the major bases around here. Your husband will most likely be at Norfolk, unless his ship goes to the yards, then its Portsmouth. Langley is where they send some of the wives for medical because they ran out of spots at Norfolk (or at least that's what they told me Friday). I did the same thing when my husband got his verbals. I started researching everything. When he gets his written orders, his new command will send you guys a welcome packet which will go in-depth about the area, the base, ect. Where is Harrisburg?
Comment by camenae on May 23, 2011 at 2:51pm

lol, I have no clue where any of those places are, Jess! We'll be living in Harrisonburg. I've done nothing but research the area since he got his verbals, so I think I have everything we need written down. Hopefully it's as easy as it seems it's going to be...

Right now I'm on the ETA website trying to look at the DPS system but it's saying there's an invalid certificate. Sooo I'm on hold with the help desk so I can figure this out!

Camenae- We live in The Township at Hampton. Its about a 20 minute drive from NOB, five minutes from Langley, and about 30-45 minutes from Portsmouth, depending on traffic. Hampton is lovely, and everything is within walking distance. One thing that my husband and I like to do is run to the town center and check movie times, then run home and prepare for a date night (: Let me know if you need any websites, recommendations of areas, ect. I'll be more then happy to help.

Jenny, I answered in more detail in the GF group.  Sorry, but no, they do not change orders because the sailor married after.
Comment by jennnyj on May 22, 2011 at 5:39pm
So my husband graduated A School and is at his first duty stationed on an unaccompanied tour for 2 years in Bahrain, most people are telling me his tour should only be 1 year. We got married AFTER he got his orders, is there anyway he can change this to 1 year instead of 2?
