Spot on. Just getting TO Japan is a chore enough, then trying to adjust to a new culture AND the Navy, and doing it alone until you make connections is hell for many wives. But it is well worth the fight to get there, to learn about a new place, a way of life, yourself and so much more. You can even complete a degree with an accredited university on base. I made lifelong friends in Japan.

Hang in there, and ask questions on the Japanbases forum. They are families going through the process and will have first hand current information. Be sure to ask detailed questions.

Honestly, this is just one of the bummers about being a young enlisted person. It may not seem fair, but I'm sure their have been plenty of reason why they have these regulations in place. Such asa young wife call her husband's Chief saying  "Mike has worked 40 hours this week, can you send him home, or when does he get his over time check?" I know it sounds ridiculous but phone calls happen like this happen state side, i'm sure they happen overseas. Incidents like this not only get the sailor in trouble but if they are repeated they can get the spouse sent home.

Just visiting Brady when he was working as an enlisted person in FL for months at a time. I could not imagine being a new bride, in a foreign country having a husband who works, long strange hours. It honestly sounds miserable.

My brother is single and stationed in Japan we frequently talk to him via skype, he's got a android (we play words with friends, facebook ect) he doesn't feel so far away.

Not everyone gets a overseas station first either, i'm sure it depends on where there are job opening for the sailor's rate and rank.

The good news is he can request  waiver for you once he makes E-4.  He may have to extend his tour length.

A good forum where you can ask people who are in Japan or recently stationed there specific questions:

a.  Types.  Overseas tour length types are as follows:

(1) Accompanied (with Family Member(s)).  Assigned to members accompanied or joined by command-sponsored family member(s).  First-term enlisted members may be required to serve the accompanied tour without family members present.  See MILPERSMAN 1306-126 for details.

  (2) Unaccompanied (All Others).  Assigned to single members or those who either voluntarily or involuntarily are not accompanied by command-sponsored family member(s).

Someone at FFSC does not know their regulations.  Seriously, single sailors do not get accompanied tours.

Comment by Anti M on May 10, 2011 at 12:55am
Hmmm. That sounds completely wrong. Did you ask them which regulation they were quoting? Single sailors get unaccompanied orders. No reason to issue accompanied orders to them. I've BEEN an single sailor, I have had orders in my hands. No dependents authorized.

Still doesn't change the fact an E-3 can't take dependents to Japan without a waiver for command sponsorship. You really don't want to hear this, do you?

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I talked to FFSC today and they told me Sailors usually get unaccompanied orders if their deployment is going to be under a year. Anything over that and they are accompanied. Keyword: Usually...

I'm really not trying to be harsh or mean, just trying to get you all the most accurate information.  Sometimes what people think is right is not, that's why I fall back to the regulations as a knowledge base.
