Also,

That is the final word.  Anything different has been luck, or by waiver.  I do hope it all works out, but check your sources.  If it is opinion or personal anectdotes, then that person got lucky. Jess is correct, there is a lot of variation, so you might be alright.

The no dependents thing?  I was in Japan as active duty a good long time, I know the policies.  Yes, it varies by base in some cases.  There are some exceptions, but you can't count on that.  In all cases, command sponsorship is required.

Check paragraph 6. a and b.  If an E-3 shows up with a dependent, they will be sent back to the US (CONUS).  The regulations don't lie.

Honestly, accompanied orders overseas all depend on rate, where overseas they are going, and marital status. What holds true for one sailor and his situation might not hold true for another sailor and his situation. And the situation is ALWAYS changing. Seriously, I could tell you some awesome stories about the past 24 hours of my life and how the Navy has switched things up. So you can go ahead with plan A of living overseas, but you should always have plan B ready.

That's weird that y'all say that because my husband was told differently. Everything that I have read online also says that they will have accompanied orders overseas...

Thanks Whitney and Anti M for the great information. I will pass this on.

E-3 and below are not authorized to take dependents overseas.  While a married sailor can be sent overseas without their dependents, if there is a choice between giving that set of orders to a married or unmarried sailor, all other factors being equal,  the unmarried one is more likely to be tapped for the overseas tour.  Not a hard and fast rule, just the way things seem to go most often. Certainly not a reason to rush a marriage, but something to know about.  Some couples opt for the courthouse wedding during A school so the orders will be issued "with dependents".  That's what pays for your move.

My friend was an MA, she missed the first day of indoc (flight delays).  Therefore she missed filling out the form saying she was married. She was issued orders to Diego Garcia, which is unaccompanied for everyone.  When she called the detailer, he gave her a new set of orders to Norfolk.  A single sailor was sent instead, one who had the same rate/rank/training.  I know it doesn't always happen this way, but it shows they do pay attention to marital status when issuing orders.

Its very common to move E1-E5's to overseas stations. They will not move spouses in most cases. Married or not married doesn't matter when they pick to who they send. They don't do accompanied tours to lets say Japan for those in the junior enlisted ranks. Atleast, that is how it was explained to me.

Question - Is it true they try to send single sailors overseas vs. married sailors? My boyfriend and I are not married, but hope to be within the next year. He is in A school now (waiting to actually start classes, though) for IT ATF. He should have a two week leave in September when he SHOULD finish A school (if he ever starts). After that, it's C school in P'Cola, also. I want to move with him when he is stationed. I have heard that if you are NOT married at the time he receives his orders, the Navy will NOT pay for you move (not THAT big of a deal, I'll live with it). I just really don't want the fact that we would not be married yet, be the factor in him getting stationed overseas.

Any insight??

Even a small VW can have a roof rack/roof bag.  You can put soft items in it like bedding or bulky coats you will need later.  Just be sure it locks.

You can get an official what not to pack list from PPO, it may even be online.
