Michelle, in 2011, we stayed at Marriott Spring Hill Suites. It was very clean, nice hotel in a convenient location. During that trip, we attended a Meet and Greet at the Ramada, and that hotel was very run down, though we didn't see the actual rooms.

We are flying in to Midway and staying at the Navy Lodge - Flying southwest was by far the cheapest plane fare from here, and they only go into midway.

I'm not too worried since he disclosed it and was told he was ok months ago...but it would sure be nice to hear from him to know what is going on over there, and so I don't keep wondering.

" One kid getting discharged because he had family counseling when he was 8 when parents went through a divorce and not sure how navy found out."

My son that is ship 02/Div 910 had counseling when he was about that age after a divorce...  Now I'm sick to my stomach...

I know you are all anxiously awaiting that first call home...and were hoping for them because of the Holiday.

There are lots of reasons that they don't come earlier than the "3 week" mark-the talked about, "I'm still alive" call. They are too busy and time has to be scheduled to use the Phone banks at RTC. There is one room (it's large but still) for 6000++ Recruits.

But let me suggest something as well. That first call home is very emotional for both Recruits and Family. It impacts you. Can set their mood for the rest of the day. So sometimes I think that it is held off until the Recruits are acclimated a bit more to their new life.

Right now, "no news is good news"...it means that your recruit is on track.

Hang in there!

Recruit leadership is chosen asap. A COC (Chain of Command) needs to be established to keep it organized and orderly. Plus, that's the basis for military life. :-)

Leadership positions are only for the duration of BC. They can be "lost" (based on performance) and reassigned to another Recruit or back to the same Recruit. Though it is better to try and have it maintained by the original Recruit to maintain stability.

I have heard of RDC's switching up the whole infrastructure, change all the positions, temporarily to show the recruits how important COC is to run a ship. I don't believe this is a common practice but only done when necessary. IOW, that's a challenge that is occurring in that division.

Joy, my SR is on Ship 14 Div 062. I've only received the form letter and a call the night he arrived.

Comment by diannep on November 29, 2014 at 3:19pm

Correct, Alicia.  The mailing of the form letter has nothing to do with the timing of the training of the Recruit Mail Petty Officer.  The form letter is sent when the division fills, so the lower-numbered divisions usually send theirs out before the higher-numbered ones do.  But as far as personal mail coming from your SRs or being delivered to your SRs, that has to wait for the training of the Recruit Mail Petty Officer.

Creolegoddess, sorry, I don't know why I thought son vs bf. My son is on Ship 14, Div 062, & the only reason I know this is from the form letter, which was delivered Tuesday. My understanding is that the form letter is not held up while waiting for the training of a Recruit Mail Petty Officer. I live in the Midwest, which I'm sure helped speed up delivery. Creolegoddess, may I ask how you have so much info already--that your SR was being trained as the yeoman, etc.?

Comment by diannep on November 29, 2014 at 11:51am

creolegoddess.....prayers for all on Ship 5 as it is so very hard for them....not much to do but wait and worry.  Please keep us posted on your SR.
