Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by MaryK on January 23, 2013 at 8:45pm: To Red Rover- I just got a call from my son's recruiter tonight and he has the same ship# and division # as your son. The recruiter also confirmed the PIR date of 3/15/13- so nice to get the info. Now I can get his letters in the mail and start planning our trip to Chicago. It's great to have a place to get info and talk with other Navy loved ones.

Comment by Red Rover on January 23, 2013 at 7:53pm: I also am assuming that my son's PIR date is 3/15/13. He left Jan. 17th and his recruiter emailed me his ship #12 and div.-119. I know this could be wrong from what I have read so does anyone have a loved one in this same ship? I have been learning so much from this site. I am thankful for all the tips for going to Chicago.

In Washington and just had our first rain in 14 days, Keep checking the weather in Great Lakes. Is that what the locals call it? Was an Air Force wife for 20 years

Comment by diannep on January 23, 2013 at 2:18pm: My son also had his A School (guaranteed) on his enlistment paperwork so he knew where he was going before bootcamp. They usually meet with a classifier to go over their rate choice at some point during bootcamp...and after that, they should know where they are going for A School. Any who are "undesignated" will stay in GL for about 4 weeks of A School, then have some Leave before heading to their duty station. Usually a ship!

Most who are flying out for A School will leave, like MSmom said, the day after PIR. They are bussed in the wee hours of the morning, and you can meet them there and wait with them (you can obtain an airlines gate pass w/ID so you can wait with your sailor until the plane leaves). You can also hand off personal items to them at the airport...cell, laptop, ipod, etc.

The families with SRs staying at GL for A School are the really lucky ones since they get daytime liberty all through the weekend with their new sailors. We ask all to try and book your return flights late Sunday or even Monday so you don't miss any time with your sailors.

If you know your SR's rate then we can help you figure out where A school will be. My son knew where he was going to school because it was on his enlistment paperwork.

Comment by GB on January 23, 2013 at 1:47pm: @MSmom- thanks... helped - but still confusing..I guess I need to rent a car if I am flying in to Chicago. So much to do. LOL. Oh mid way through boot camp will they know if they will go to the other base there or shipped somewhere else.
