~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

CONGRATULATIONS to all the new Sailors and their Families!!  This is for future reference when your Sailor changes from A School to their new duty station/base and from base/ship to base/ship.  Each base will have their own Personal Property office for you or your Sailor to check with.  Please re-post this information to all groups!  We need to help our Sailors save money!!

Personal Property Information for those in Pensacola/Corry Station.

I wanted to give you all a heads up that your Sailors are authorized personal property shipments when they leave A School headed to their first duty station. My son said no one knew about it and for some reason the schools do not tell the students about this and my son said his friends were all paying out of pocket to ship stuff home.

Once they have hard copy orders they need to visit the personal property office and they will be given instructions on how to ship their goods at the Navy's expense. Sailors should not be paying to move themselves. I got the information for my son and he went and did it and found it an easy process.

That is great info Lori24, thanks so much for letting us know :)

Comment by diannep on March 17, 2013 at 8:07am

Thanks, Lori!  Appreciate the info!  We knew that families were allowed out there--thanks for the clarification on the number of gate passes issued...in a previous PIR group, when we first were hearing that the SRs/sailors were told that they could not have families meet them at the airports, we checked it out.  Airport personnel seemed surprised that the sailors were being told that they couldn't have their families there.  One mom had already posted that no one was going to stop HER!  She was going to the airport to be with her sailor...regardless!  HOOYAH!  :-)  I would imagine, though, in times of increased terrorist alert, they could change their policy somewhat, but can't imagine they would totally deny family member(s) time with their sailors before departure.

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience!  Did your sailor and shipmates get a standing ovation when they were announced to board?  We have heard that happens alot in Chicago!

Lala and diannep I have some information that I think would be very helpful to your next PIR group. If their Sailor flies to A school from Chicago midway it is a TSA rule that the airlines have to allow family members a gate pass, the number allowed depends on the airline. My Sailor flew out of Delta and all we had to do was go with him to the airline counter and they gave every adult with a valid ID a gate pass no questions asked. We had six people and their was no problem. Also it is good to know that you get to go through your own personal security line and do not have to wait in the long regular line which was a huge time saver. We had a great experience through Midway!!!
