OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

My SR's letter had four names listed as Guests so does this mean four is the official number for attendees?

Comment by diannep 11 minutes ago ...by the way, in the past, the Navy has had some FB groups shutdown when ladies were not practicing OPSEC when ships were deployed. Very dangerous for their sailors and for the security of our country when that happens.

I would like to "ditto" what Betsy said about the PIR FB groups.  Many think that if they make the groups "closed," they are safe.  They are not.  FB is still a public site.  Any RDC (your SR's bosses) can gain access into these groups through friends, etc...posing as someone with a SR.  So, if you are sharing info there that you should not be about your SR....personal info, names, etc....your SR could pay the price on that.  It is mandatory that all of you practice OPSEC whenever posting anywhere on these social media sites.

We are not saying not to join these groups; just don't post anything there that you wouldn't post here.  But please stay on this group too.  When some in the past have gone strictly on the FB groups, they missed lots of info we are sharing here that is important, or they may even get info mixed up.  So please maintain your presence here as well.

jazzysMom:  God Bless You for wonderfully raising your granddaugher who is now on her way to becoming a sailor!  I think there is a special place in heaven for grandparents who do this!  :-)

carolyn..mom of Cydney - it looks like our daughters are in brother divisions.

I finally broke down and called the recruiter. My SR is in Ship 03 Div 118.

As this info seems to correspond with some of the others that arrived at the same time as her, let the letter envelope addressing begin (although I may not stick them in the mail until it's confirmed by her)

Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons - yes it is said what some parents forget to do. It took me years to finally say it's 'his lose'. He is now 84 years old and I haven't heard from him in quite a while. Usually when I do it's to appease his guilt. Yesterday I actually sent him an email, text message and lmsg on his phone to try and find out a little bit of his naval career so I could share it with the rest of the family. It will be interesting to see if he actually responds.

BTW... Jazz is acually his great-granddaughter...and I am her biological grandmother but to HER I am mom since I raised her since she was 7 months old and it made me very 'young' granny with teens still at home. Long story, gets confusing at times and not suited to share here...lol.
