OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Received a letter from my SR today, first one, he left 1/23.  He said he has received no mail yet.  ARG!  I have sent him at least 10-15 letters and cards along with other family members.  Veteran moms - can they hold their mail.  The address on his letter today matches the one I have.  Was doing well the last few weeks and now this, enough to put a mom over the edge!  A recruit with no moral support from letters - OMG!  Please advise.  I have called his recruiter but he can't check into it until Monday.  Sad and frustrated....

I got my first letter from my SR son. One page but it felt like it said so much! Alls well w/ DIV 123 thought they had an especially nasty day of IT ( that'll teach him to say that IT wasn't that hard!) and he's asking for song lyrics that I thought he'd like....good lord..he loves Eminem! Do I have to send my boy that!?? Bitch this and bitch that.....it might be time to introduce him to MY music/lyrics. Here comes some Peggy Lee/Beastie Boys/ Clash with a dollop of this and that! My goodness..who knew 3 paragraphs could send me over the moon?

PS- Beachlover- my son had his birthday in bootcamp during the P-days and he said while a fuss wasnt made, he wasnt singled out for anything nasty, though it was acknowledged. Don't fret too much.

Comment by diannep on February 22, 2013 at 3:20pm

Try not to worry, beachlover.  Most of the time, it is not an issue.  The RDCs are aware of their birthdates anyway!

Comment by beachlover on February 22, 2013 at 11:49am

I am sad.  I just read elsewhere that your SR may get a real hard time if it is known that it is their birthday during bootcamp, by them getting lots of cards. I know many people have sent my SR cards (though I specified that they must be in white envelopes).  Now I feel terrible that I may have caused difficulties for him.

It is strange that you received a box in the mail with these items. I hope you hear sonething soon so that you know what is happening with your brother. We will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Good Morning!

Stephany:  Hope you all get more info soon about all that's going on.

Comment by ellen0502 on February 22, 2013 at 2:31am

Stephany, I am assuming that those would be what was issued within the first 2-3 weeks. When they arrive they are given their smurfs (sweats) and are given their digitals in about two weeks. Those are probably his "first issue" on the digitals. Dress uniforms are fitted a couple of weeks later and do not have a name printed on them.

Comment by Stephany (Nick from PA sister) on February 22, 2013 at 1:29am
Not that is seems like this PIR date is valid to my SR or anything, but, today in the mail we received a t-shirt and a set of blue camo pants and shirt with the last name on it. This question in mostly for the veterans, but, why would we recieve those if he was in seperation? (I also commented on the SHIP 5 page about this, but this board is more active and you guys have been speaking about SRs just being fitted. I'm confused on how my brother has a set already in his size and with his name on them, yet they are sending him home?

Thanks for the info. My son is not staying in GL. Ouch is right. I'm sure my son enjoyed getting that shot.
Comment by diannep on February 22, 2013 at 12:00am

Carolyn:  Remember that NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!  Sounds like he is on track to becoming a sailor!

ChambosMom:  "Peanut Butters" are the black pants and khaki tops.  If your sailor will be staying in GL for A School, they usually wear these the day after PIR.

Not to be confused with the "peanut butter" shot that they received when they arrive at bootcamp!  A HUGE shot filled with thick either antibiotic or gamma gobulin (we have been told each)...given in their hip...OUCH!   Here is a rather dramatic description of receiving the peanut butter shot!
