Choose your Username. For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Comment by MelissaDTX (Ship 13 Div 127) on February 7, 2013 at 10:26am: deckard88- I believe they get mail Mon-Fri. I spoke with my son at BC on Tuesday and that's what he said. They should have gotten mail on Monday for the first time. I know it takes 3-5 days to arrive at BC. They will be able to write home this Sunday.

Comment by diannep on February 7, 2013 at 9:27am: Yes, Sam, you book Navy Lodge in your sailor's name and tell them you are there for Navy graduation. They usually want your sailor to stop by the front desk sometime after PIR -- not sure this is enforced though. They are used to having lots of families there for Navy graduation most weekends.

The ones who have stayed there have enjoyed it. Close to the bases, they give you a brown bag breakfast on PIR morning that you can take with you (yes, you can take it into PIR hall), you get a guest NEX pass to shop in a smaller NEX in the area without your sailor (sailors normally have to be with you in the NEXs). You can ask for a kitchenette and if there is still one available, you can get one for the same price as a room without the kitchenette. This is all info from Lala and FTLW who stayed there (I think ellen did too).

Betsy and I stayed at Residence Inn for our PIRs and enjoyed that too. Navy Lodge does not have the PIR shuttle, but you can use Sarge for transportation....or....drive. It is about a mile or so to RTC.

Comment by MelissaDTX (Ship 13 Div 127) on February 6, 2013 at 4:44pm: I agree with diannep- when I spoke to my son, he sounded a bit down and said it was harder than he thought it would be. I was upbeat and even got a little laugh out of him! It is so important to reassure them- he really appreciated the letters and said to keep them coming. I will admit that after I hung up, I cried for the first time. It's difficult to know that your child is going through difficult times- even though it is meant to built character.

For some reason it is sparking a memory of a member mentioning that once.
When you wrote your recruits please ask! :-)
