OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Any one on Ship 11 Div 126?  My son is at BC with a PIR 3/22/13.

My fiance's box FINALLY came today! :) He left for basic January 24th so it was long overdue. However, it was very emotional but I'm happy that I got it at long last.

Hoping for the PIR letter very soon confirming his graduation date so I can buy tickets and make reservations. :) :)

Good Morning all and welcome to the new members here!  Please be sure to check out the info in the PAGES section which is posted below the MEMBERS photo box up top....we will be adding more info as bootcamp goes along.  Don't want to overwhelm you in the beginning!

Please ask any questions you have on here....there is a team of us N4Moms veterans on here to help to answer them....no question is stupid or too trivial, nor do we mind if we have answered it before!  So please ask!

Hello all! My son left Jan 23, got the box and got a form letter. He is Ship 3 Div 123. I am VERY anxious to see him again, and get an actual letter. So glad I joined N4M! All of this is very new to me..with N4M I feel less overwhelmed and alone.

I've been wondering about information about the ship he's on. Anyone have a link or facts about it?

Comment by Craig on February 2, 2013 at 4:51am

Stephany - Here is some info on Ship 2, the USS Reuben James:

Never mind. I'm a dumb dumb. My brother is Ship 03 Div 123.

*ask about it in a letter....sorry about that.

Comment by diannep on February 2, 2013 at 12:24am

headyless:  Hmmmmm....on the 'missing" cell phone.  I hope he didn't keep it....big trouble for that.  Maybe it broke and he tossed it?  I would certainly ask about it in the letter.  It normally comes home in the box...did you check his shoes?  Because they usually put the phone in one shoe, the battery in the other.
