N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

By the way, Craig is a "NavyMoms veteran" too....he just won't admit it....  :-)  He is a great help on here as well!

Comment by Craig on February 9, 2013 at 2:46pm

Hello all, names Craig, I'm a retired Navy guy, that still works with the Navy, and who runs a Navy forum website called NavyDEP.com.  Some of your sailors were on that website prior to them leaving for boot camp.  A lot of you will be going back and forth to that website to find out what your sailor is doing each day.  Just go to this link:

http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=433

My whole family is Navy, except one traitor US Air Force daughter ~ha.  I speak and think Navy 24x7 because I work around sailors daily.  Since I talk about the Navy so much, I try to throw some humor in there to balance the threads out.

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy learning the Navy, and guaranteed, the veteran moms here know their stuff.  They will guide you through all the paths during the 8 weeks your sailor will be in boot camp....

Again, congrats to your sailors for joining the worlds greatest Navy!

btw:  Did I tell you they found a meth lab in our neighborhood?

Comment by Betsy, mom of Stennis sailor on February 9, 2013 at 2:16pm

Hello ladies!  I'm Betsy and another "veteran" mom helping out.  My youngest son (out of our 5 children) is our sailor.  He graduated from boot camp in Dec. 2010 and after completing A school in Pensacola, now works as a CTT.  He is currently deployed on the aircraft carrier, USS John C. Stennis, CVN 74.  They have been deployed since August and we are hoping that they will be coming back to their WA state home port some time in April or early May.

We also have a future son in law, who is now taking full advantage of his GI Bill, following his service.  After the completion of his 5 1/2 years as a ET on a nuke sub in Hawaii in August, he is currently enrolled as a full time college student studying Chemical Engineering.

Welcome to the Navy world!  The ladies on here are awesome and are ready to answer all your questions accurately.  Don't worry, no question is too small or trivial, just ask away.

Thanks for the heads up on the typo SYNTIA, I fixed it. :)

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on February 9, 2013 at 10:23am

Hi everyone, I am Lala, another veteran mom. i have been helping out on this site since July of 2010. I have two Sailors, my daughter (PIR 7/10) and son-in-law (PIR 10/10) They met in DEP, married while she was in A-school, 4 days before he left for boot camp and now two years later they are expecting their first baby and my first grand baby :) Super excited. They are based in VA Beach and are doing well with Navy Life. We are actually in VA visiting them right now and will be heading back home tomorrow. We got to tour the Harry S Truman aircraft carrier a couple days ago and it was really cool. We are supposed to go on a whale watching tour today but it is really windy and it will most likely get canceled. We have had a great time and I hate to say goodbye but I ready for my own bed lol.

Please let us know if you have any questions at all. We all know and understand what you are going through because we have been there. I had a hard time with my daughter being gone because I had no time to prepare. She mentioned joining one day and a month later she was gone. I cried almost daily and stalked the mail man all day, every day lol. My daughter was in the performing division and sang with the choir. Please feel free to send me a friend request if you have any questions at all, I am more than happy to help in any way I can :)

Mavis:  Check out Southwest Airlines to Milwaukee if you can.  That airport is only about 45 minutes from GL, no traffic, easy drive.  Car rental is cheaper.  Also, Southwest has no change fee if you need to change your reservation.  First 2 bags check for free.  They also fly into Chicago-Midway, which is the furthest airport from GL (an hour or so).  But if your SR will be flying out for A School, this is one of the airports they fly from the day after PIR (usually) and you will be able to meet your sailor there and wait until the plane leaves.

SECURITY CLEARANCE INFORMATION PHONE CALLS:

There is the possibility of you receiving a phone call from your SR (Seaman Recruit) during the first one to two weeks after their arrival for Security Clearance info. I received mine one week after my son arrived at RTC. Had no idea it would come that fast. I'd only really been on the site for a week or two, so I had NOTHING ready! (My son asked for two more names along with their phone number and address. Sometimes you maybe asked to fax the info but he was told to get it from me right then.).So... if your Recruit has a rating that requires security clearance information...800 Divisions, IT's, CTI's CTT's Nukes, AT's (the list goes on!), anyone that handles confidential info...have a list of references by the phone.

This is a short business call and is monitored. No time for chit chat...but once in a great while the person monitoring the call allows a few extra minutes.

The area code for GL is "847". My security clearance call, the caller ID said "US GOVERNMENT". We have also had "PAY PHONE" reported and then area codes for the surrounding areas...so answer all...and just get rid of those telemarketers!

Also, if you receive a call from your SR (at any time...not just the Security Call) and miss it...please do not call the number back. Your SR could get in trouble.
