For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Hell Week this week and he explained that they didn't get calls last weekend (newer div. are getting the call time) but they are earned one for having a 4.5 out of 5 on an inspection/test! Just wanted to share since I know we're all on pins and needles not having heard from our SRs...hoping more letters are on their way for everyone! Can't believe it was 5 weeks ago that he left! wow....Apr 5 is around the corner!

Soo....you can bring a few for her to take if she wants...or....mail them to her once she is at A School. Ask her if there is anything else she wants you to bring up besides the phone/laptop. I mailed my son his cell at A School with no problems.

I will tell my SR what you said, I know he will anxious to know how it goes. I am so looking forward to PIR! And not looking forward to the week after, my mom has knee surgery on Mon, and hubbys on Thurs. I know it will be an emotional week for me, up and downs.

Comment by ellen0502 on March 13, 2013 at 11:46am: swcc27mom, Like diannep said, they are allowed their phones and laptops after PIR and once at A School in GL, they are not allowed to have their phone at school, muster, etc. He may also only be allowed to have it at night in his room for the first couple of weeks (during indoc). Some schools and ships rules are different for phones etc for the first two weeks, so...

I would suggest that your son let the POs know that his "dad" is having surgery, and on what day.They may allow him to call you in the afternoon to see how everything is, even if he is in school.

My brother had open heart surgery, for a valve replacement, while my son was in A School, and he told the PO at school what was going on with his uncle. On the day of surgery the Chief PO came and got him out of class (he thought he was in trouble for something..LOL). The Chief allowed him to call me to find out how things were going, and give me the phone number at the school to call if needed. Boy was I surprised by that phone call since it was in the middle of the school day.
