~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

The Weather Widget is interactive. Click the green dot on the top bar and drag it along the to change the time. Click LIVE to go back to current time. Click on the days to change to that day or expand out to six days.

He may send back the standard size bible, they don't have much space to stow things while in BC. If it comes "home" in his box then sending him a small one should not be a problem. He will have to open the package in front of his RDCs, but it will not be a problem and they will let him keep it.

Comment by WeAllGoByGeorgeLongStory on April 19, 2013 at 3:40am

He had asked for a very slim line Bible.  Is that off the list?  He took is standard size one, but he wasn't sure if they would let him keep it.

Good luck at the Recruiters!

Oh, I also saw that your SR requested some items? They will not be able to receive any packages at BC only cards and letters. (with the exception of contacts and solution; light makeup for the gals later on in BC for pictures and PIR. I will add a letter writing PAGE soon :-) All "bulky" mail is opened in front of an RDC to be inspected for content. All pictures sent in mail is inspected for content.

BUT here is the scoop from RTC FB FAQ's on "what can I send...":

WHAT CAN I SEND OR NOT SEND MY RECRUIT:

Recruits are allowed to receive letters, cards, photos, stationery, envelopes and stamps. You should first ask your recruit if he/she is allowed to receive any newsaper/magazine articles as it is up to each division's Recruit Division  Commanders (RDCs) if they may or may not receive those. Sending cards in colored envelopes is fine. Sending musical cards is strongly discouraged as your recruit may not appreciate having to open such a card in the presence of his/her shipmates where everyone can hear it. Do NOT send any type of glitter in cards or letters to your recruit. Please keep in mind they are in military training and do get frequent inspections and any glitter found in their racks (bunks) will cause them to receive a negative mark. Keep your letters/cards simple. Recruits may receive one pair of contacts and one week's worth of solution to wear for photos and/or graduation. Female recruits are permitted to receive minimal makeup items to wear for photos and/or graduation. Recruits may NOT receive any other type of care packages or food items. All food items are discarded.

Little history on my recruit.  When he was 18-months old we lived in an old farm house on the edge of a steep river bank.  Nearest neighbor was two miles away.  I went to clean house, in the back, leaving my 18 month old, 3 year old and 5 year old in the living room watching Sesame Street, checking on them every few minutes.  When I stepped into the living room for the last time, I was missing 18-month old.  The other two were still engrossed in their show.  I looked all through the house, hollering his name.  Then a fear hit me...what if he somehow got outside.  How could it be, the other two didn't learn to open our funny screen door until they were at least two.  Sure enough, the front screen door was ajar.  I didn't know where to look, to the right was a huge metal bridge with a 60' drop-off into the river below.  To the left was an endless pasture, overgrown much taller then he was.  I paniced as I ran first one way, then the other....he had actually crossed our dusty dirt road and wandered inside a huge cattle barn and was on the other side of the empty barn when I finally found him.

Fast forward to when he was 12 and I took our five children and my blind mother to the Grand Canyon.  To this day, the only thing the family remembers about that trip is my constant command for "Navy Recruit George [in lue of first name], get away from the edge."  His overly confident remark was always, "Mom, Dad is Cherokee and our people climbed these rocks."

Now that he is out of reach and I don't know his address, I'm reliving a combination of those days and emotions all over again!

I agree with ellen :-) It just keeps them "under the radar" and also it is good OPSEC practice for their career.

Make sure you read the info in the TEXT area where the Countdown clock is and also the PAGE :

N4M’s Community Guidelines and OPSEC

One we know the specific Divisions for this TG we will be adding Division Discussions and their will be veteran SPECOP moms (Cor and sjtina) who will "go through" with you to answer questions and lend support . They are already here on the Group :-)

Always stay on the Main Page here as well as that is where we veteran moms are the most. We do check the Division Discussions to keep them monitored but with 8 TG's (that's 80 + Divisions) it is hard to keep up with answers here. PLUS, if it is on the Main Page then the whole GROUP can see it.

Comment by ellen0502 on April 19, 2013 at 3:24am

First names are OK although not recommended for anyone, but since your SR is SpecOps you need to be a little more vigilant about what is seen. :)

Comment by WeAllGoByGeorgeLongStory on April 19, 2013 at 3:23am

I will call his recruiter in the morning, maybe even go down there.

Comment by FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW on April 19, 2013 at 3:23am

:-) It is frustrating a bit in the beginning. It will get better. "Hurry up...and wait." is a common saying in the Military.

Comment by WeAllGoByGeorgeLongStory on April 19, 2013 at 3:21am

Hello FireTeamLeaderWife - Thanks for all the helpful things.  I will not use 800...keep hoping for a letter/box/call or something.  I thought first names were okay, but after your response I changed my user name.  This has a name in it, a nickname unrelated to any real/given name in our family, but one we all go by when we are frustrated...I figured now is as good a time a any to use it, as I am frustrated with his not lining these things up very well to this point.

Comment by ellen0502 on April 19, 2013 at 3:19am

You may be able to get the division number from your SRs recruiter if you call. Also, if your screen name is any part of your sons name you will need to change it. :)
