My husband is going to pensacola flordia
Hi girls! i got a phone call and a letter on the 17th, ( old news by now), he sounded tired but ok. just trying to get through till july 21st, when we fly out, wish i had some news to report. i will let you know if i hear anything.
Terrysproudmom: Ha! Good for you!!....I have to say...I have been on FB for about 2-3 yrs...persuaded by a friend. The part that I liked is reconnecting with friends from my childhood that I had lost touch with. Now...that is fun! I rarely post on mine...and probably check it about every 5 days....but in the beginning, I got on more often. I have some "people" from my sons' generation who "friended" me and some of them post every time they go to the bathroom! UGH! Also, when they are leaving town, etc....not such a safe thing to post, in my humble opinion. The ones I am speaking of here are married with children and should know better, don't you think?
FB can be a real attribute to those in the Navy, or it could cause lots of problems. It is all up to those who post on it. I would imagine that sailors on FB are being monitored by their Commands on FB and I would assume there are dire consequences for "misbehaving" on FB. Used the correct way, however, it is a great link for those overseas and out of cell/text range, I think.
So...enjoy! Let me know how many "old" friends you have found in the first week! That includes old boyfriends....oooops, did I SAY that?????? :-)
Welcome NewNavyWife: Hi, I'm one of the veterans terrysproudmom referred to. There are several of us on here....Lala, whose post is below, being one of them.
I applaud you both for not having FB pages. My son decided against that too. I am on there...but rarely go on. My son said that for those sailors having FB pages, they have to sign a confidentiality contract not to disclose Navy info on there. I will say...it seems helpful to those who are based overseas and out of cell contact lots of the time, so you may change your minds down the road if his circumstances warrant that.
Anyway, to answer your question about liberty....Terrysproudmom is correct. It depends on the A School and flight availability. Is your SR staying in GL for A School or flying out? That makes a difference. If staying, they usually move over there right after PIR...takes 3-5 hours for them to move and then they will call you (must have a phone card) to pick them up for liberty from the A School (right next to RTC). Then he most likely will have daytime liberty for the weekend. Some used to get overnights, but I'm not sure they do that anymore...don't think so. He can return to that base with his cell, laptop, and other personal items.
If he is flying out, he most likely will fly out on Sat, but sometimes they fly out on Sun if flights are full. But that doesnt' mean you can't visit with him at the airport! Many families do that...the sailors are bussed there in the wee hours of Sat. morning to wait for flights. You can meet up with them at the USO there (Ohare) or before security (Midway) since the USO is past security at that airport. Then your sailor can go with you to the airlines counter so you can get a gate pass to wait at their gate with them until their flight leaves. HAVE ID!
Also, at this time, you can hand them a SOLID black or navy backpack/duffel (no logos, other colors, or writing on it) with personal items in it....cell, laptop, ipods, a few civilian clothes they can wear once they phase up in A School, some snacks---just abide by airlines carryon rules). It is up to your sailor if they want to take this. Some would rather you mail them these things once they are settled into A School.
So....if flying out...count on PIR day with your sailor from the end of PIR (10:30) until about 8-9 that night. Then time on Sat at the airport. If staying in GL, you will have to say goodbye for most of the day Fri, but will have weekend time.
Only your SR will know his travel plans and he won't know this until shortly before PIR.
Hope this helps!
