I'm so glad they let her call you.  Nice to know those letters are getting through to our SRs now.

Got to talk to my SR today!! Totally unexpected but so great to hear her voice.  She got news of her grandad passing (he was sick when she left and I knew she would be wondering).  Very tough phone call...but SO great to hear from her.  She sounded tired but good...said she got 10 letters the first day.  I mailed the first letter June 3 and she just got them.  She said it takes a while...but that they mean everything.  She was crying when she called...and so was I.  Left me drained emotionally....she actually said she wishes she was here for ME to make sure I am ok.  Words can't tell you all how proud I am of my SR!

BoosMom:  A "push" division means that they have less days to get the training done....but don't worry, they get it done.  Sounds like it took a good bit of time to fill her division/processing days too, so they got a later start than the others.  No worries...

Just got an update from Casanova(boo's b/f) he got a letter, said she got 15 letters the first time she got mail.  Of course, I had the highest number, haha.   Says she looks like a chipmunk with acorns in her cheeks from having wisdom teeth pulled.  She still sounds upbeat.  Apparently she has made friends with another girl who was in sick bay with her :-)  Such a relief, now I need to go stalk my mailman!  PS she also said that this is/was a push division but the push didnt start until 7/13.  Not sure what that means, she has been there since 5/24????

The backpack/carryon duffle that they can have with personal items can be solid black or solid navy.  No logos or other colors are allowed on it.  We recommend that you all bring these things (cells, laptops, ipods, etc) so they can at least enjoy them in the hotel room after PIR.  Some civilian clothes too that they can wear in the hotel room--they can take the clothes to A School but can't wear until phased up.  If they decide they don't want to take these things with them to A School, you can take them home and mail them later.  Nothing can return with them to RTC....the tradeoff has to be at the airport.  You can meet up with them at the USO at Ohare....if leaving from Midway, please have your sailor meet you before security as the USO is past security....your sailor will accompany you to the airlines counter to get your gate pass so you can wait with the sailors until flights leave.

On one PIR site, one mom said that she took her sailor from the airport to the Navy Pier for some R&R.  Not a good idea.  She was recommending all do that because it worked out for them, but I highly do NOT recommend that.  Should they have had any problem returning to the airport before his flight, and he missed it, there would have been heavy consequences for him at A School.  I can assure you that my sailor would not have "chanced it."  So....they need to remain at the airport and you can visit there with them waiting for their flights.

I agree with Lala....book through Sunday if at all possible.  Plans for them can change, and they do.  Happened in the 5/26 group.  Thank goodness many of the ladies had booked through Sunday so had that extra time with their sailors.

When packing the carryon for sailor, remember to abide by airlines carryon regulations.

You can meet them at the airport and even pass off their phones and laptops to them to take with them. Unless they are on a chartered flight (Chartered flights don't happen very often) sometime their flight are late afternoon and you can spend several hours with them at the airport. The USO is a great place to sit and relax and hear all about bootcamp. Some get lucky and get the whole weekend with their recruits :-) And some who think they won't get more than Friday end up with last minute changes and get the whole weekend. That is why we recommend you stay the whole weekend if you can just in case you get that extra time with your Sailor.

I believe yes, you can go to the gate. Not positive but my bf's recruiter said he thinks you can.

Don't count me as an authority, but since my SR is also slated to be a HM and going to San Antonio.  I was informed that they generally depart on Saturday afternoon.  And from what I hear you can spend some time with them before the depart Great Lakes and even at the airport (but don't quote me) hopefully someone from the last class will verify that.
Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on June 14, 2011 at 9:52pm
They usually know about half way through or a little later if they will be leaving on Saturday or not. Most of those who are not staying in Great Lakes for A-school will leave on Saturday but it depends on if enough flights are available. I wish they could all have the whole weekend with their families.
