Wanted to add to all of this good info being posted...around week 4 of training (called "hell" week), things start to turn around for them. They actually realize that they are accomplishing something, the "yelling" is not quite so bad, and they start to see the "prize" in the distance for them. No matter how much they may have doubted what they are doing, they now will become focused and your letters/calls should be more positive. There was a real change in my son at this time. In the beginning, some of them don't think they can do ANYTHING right...all part of the plan. "Break them down" to "Build them back up into sailors."
Remember, there are all ages here, from all different backgrounds, life experiences, goals...somehow, the RDCs have to get them all on the "same page" because the Navy is all about "teamwork" and "having each other's back." So....let them do their jobs the way they have to! It isn't easy for us "moms" to hear...believe me...but it works. When my son shared after bc how his Chief had talked to him, I got tears in my eyes. Even screaming in his ear so loudly that it hurt...the only time my son said that he could feel his eyes well up with tears. But then, when they had a one-on-one talk once, he was totally different. He knew then that this guy truly wanted him to succeed.
We love what the RDCs do--making the SRs into sailors! HOOYAH!
Veryproud. That is very good information for the ladies on what to expect during the first week.
Ladies, if you don't get a phone call from your SR try not to worry. No news is good news. Also, there are only a limited number of phones for the recruits to use. Often there are many SR who don't get to make a phone call because there just is not the time. Sometimes SR get to make a call home around week 4.
LOVE THIS WEBSITE!! Thanks to all the moms out there who have experience wtih the Navy to help us "rookies." Our only child (son) is at RTC - so happy to have our own PIR date and group!
Glad to see our other veteran moms---Lala, fireteamleaderswife, Betsy, and Sandy--have found this group! I'm sure we will have others drop in from time to time, but these are your "diehards" who will be with you through this whole journey!
al0251- :-( poor doggy! I hope he feels better soon! Missing his boy!
Sparkeys_Piglet- BWA-HA-HA...stinky feet and Subway...that is a new one for me!
I'm here! LOL I will post my "stuff" soon! Tomorrow definitely.
I am a "newer" veteran mom...my Sailor PIR'd on 05/26/2011...I was in the Memorial Day weekend PIR.
It was a Thursday and he was supposed to fly out Friday AM. While I was flying over on Tuesday...he called and said that that had all changed...he had liberty until Saturday PM and would fly out Sunday AM. Boy was I glad that I had heeded the advice given me and booked through until Sunday. I would have missed two whole extra days with him!
When it was still going to be a "next day" departure I just figured my other two boys and I would make a vacation out of it (my DH was deployed at the time and unable to attend :-(. He just came home this last Friday ;-)! He is AF reserve.)
So...if you can...book through until Sunday...or Monday since it is a holiday! (You'll know as you get closer...your SR-Seaman Recruit- will be your best source) I originally booked my hotel until TUESDAY. Once it got closer and I booked the flight I just changed my hotel (most let you do it up to 24 hours and the Navy Lodge-day off!) reservation. I took a chance on possibly missing out on Monday if he did get until Monday...but sometimes there is only so much you can gamble on!
wow that is amazing to have the same PIR 2 years in a row for your 2 sons. I wonder if that has ever happened before. Very cool :-)
I am Lala, I have been on this site helping others for a year. My daughter had PIR last year on July 23rd. She is now married to a Sailor and she and her husband are based in VA Beach. IF you have any questions at all please ask, I won't be here as much over the next few days as I will be heading to the Keys very early Friday morning for my honeymoon but I look forward to getting to know all of you. I hope you are writing letters already :-) Write every day if you can. mail call is like Christmas to the recruits. Welcome to your PIR group page ;-)
