al0251: You are exactly right....sometimes before a holiday weekend they will have PIR on Thurs. Please book your reservations through the weekend if possible because some of them if not all just may not have to fly out right away. In the Memorial Day weekend PIR group, it was also on a Thurs. Some of the ones flying to Pensacola were supposed to fly out on Fri...but we veterans always warn families to book through the weekend just in case. Thankfully, most did...because they changed the travel plans of the sailors and they had liberty up there for the weekend!
Are you renting a car at the airport? We recommend that you all rent cars if you can. You can get some deals out there and it gives you some freedom to explore the area with your sailor. Your transportation to the base for PIR will either be driving yourself or taking a PIR shuttle from your hotel. Most of the hotels have it (but Navy Lodge does not). There is also a wonderful man named "Sarge" who is retired military. He loves the Navy families...one lady just posted for another PIR group that he actually attended their MeetNGreet! He is great and will provide transporation for you from/to airport, to PIR, etc. He is a wealth of info also. Here's his number if anyone would like to book him for travel:
Sarge: 847-212-0246
Hi everyone i am soooo happy there is a 9/1/11 group. My oldest son is there and I missed him ssooo much. However I am very proud of him he has been an example of perseverance since he decided to join the navy. I already received the form letter and last night i got the Kid in a box. It was a lot of mixed feelings and at the same time kind of funny. He left his dog here with me and as me he is missing him a lot. As soon as I got my son's dirty clothes the dog recognized his smell and after that he went looking for him all over the house. After a while of not finding him he sat for a looooonnng time at the front door, like waiting for him. He is having some hard time, because he is not eating as much as he usually does. I want to wish all of the moms lots of strenght to go thoroght this face. I also has some questions: In my son form letter the graduation is 9/1/11 it's a Thursday? I figure out that because its a holiday weekend they choose that day instead of Friday Also ,which hotel is good around there and its better to rent a car to go to the base?
