OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

SamsMySailor:  The password for the gate pass should have been in the original form letter you received shortly after your SR arrived up at Bootcamp.  Written in by your SR.  So check the form letter.  If the password was not written in, you will need to ask your SR this -- maybe mail off a letter so your new sailor will have it when the I'm a Sailor call is made.

If you don't have the gate pass, you can park at the Metra (train) station just up the street from RTC....or....take a shuttle (Sarge's or the local area ones....same price).

If your sailor paid for the pictures, he will have them and bring them to you after he returns from his ship, right after PIR is over (they return to their ships briefly).  If he didn't pay, you can pay/pick them up in the Photo Lab next to the NEX after PIR.

My son's PIR is 9/13. Aren't we supposed t get a letter the week before to let us know a gate pass or is that something he tells us during the "I'm a Sailor" call? We are renting a car and will need to have the gate pass. Also, when we are on base before the cermony begins is that when we get his photos?

Ok, Lala....so....you come down here in Jan or Feb....then head to ellen's in Mar or Apr when MAYBE it has warmed up a little?  Or you may have to put hers off until May if it will be cold and snowy!  :-)

Comment by ellen0502 on September 2, 2013 at 9:33pm

OOOOOHHHHHHH! I am next Lala, but I am afraid you won't be able to avoid the cold and snow here!

Must be Dianne, my hubby has at least that many, several that have never been worn and some that he has had for probably 15 years lol. I will be happy to come clean for you, maybe this winter would be cold when it's cold and snowy here and I need some sunshine lol :)

p.s.  Lala, my older son is also a tshirt hoarder....and he is only 29!  I think he has enough to wear for about 6 mos/1 per day without having to wash one of them.  He and your hubby must be related....  :-)
