Ronca: Marlinspike is done on a mock up ship and they practice mooring, line handling, putting out to sea, even in difficult circumstances (complete with wind and rain, I heard) and the recruits have to know how to do all that is involved in basic seamanship.

Just received a letter from my son and he and half of the division has been sick for the past week. He went to medical and received medicine but missed like 30 min of his 4 hour watch and received IT and a good chewing out for it. I guess that's why a lot of them try to tough out sickness because they still get chewed out for not being a able to give 100 percent. He said that was the first time he was chewed out since starting bc. They all got the same haircut last week which he thinks looks funny. He said they have Marlinspike today...can someone tell me what that is??? He said they have to passed in order to graduate. They also have live fire and their official PFA this week so they've been doing PT everyday for the past week except for Sunday. He did confirm that they've moved to a new ship but to continue sending mail to the original address; it will forwarded. He's an honor guard so I can't wait to see him march in on 10/01/10!!!!

Remember, ladies, we are here to support ALL of the recruits, troublemakers or not. We don't know what issues all arrived at boot camp with, but I would imagine there are some horrible stories of tough times. Kudos that the Navy doesn't give up on them...that they work through this. My son has something very traumatic in is background...I was so touched that during his toughest time at bc, when he was being screamed out and felt almost worthless, one of the Chiefs took a full hour of his time to discuss this traumatic event with my son. He just wanted to make sure that my son had "dealt" with this...which he has...but it meant the world to my son that this Chief, who had caused him the most misery before this, had shown such a compassionate side when talking one on one with him. He went on to do great in bc after that. W

We can't be so quick to label someone a "troublemaker." Let's face it...we live in a world where we are ALL paying the price of others errors, maybe even sometimes our own....being zapped by the security machines when we leave a store, the hassle of having to prove who we are because there is so much identity theft, and let's not even mention the inconvenience of flying these days because of "someone else's" errors. I would like to see all of these recruits become sailors, including the "troublemakers" who may now have overcome their issues and are now fine sailors!

By the way, my son never even mentioned all of the IT they had to do when he was in bc...until I kept reading on N4M's about how often it happens. When I asked him after he finished A School, he told me about what they had to do...2 hours once for one guy's error...that guy was no allowed to participate but had to watch all of the others. He said the guy ended up in tears and you know what? My son had a heart for the guy...and felt horrible for him, even though my son was one of the ones who went to bed sweaty and exhausted after all of the IT. Let's try to see to the root of the problems here, ladies....this site is for ALL families....we are here to help.

Ladies, my niece's husband was stationed at Goose Creek outside of Charleston, SC and they loved it. The beach is nearby and Charleston is a very historical area filled with great shopping, dining, and fun!
MissUAlready-I'm sorry you are having to go through this and I'm praying for you as well as your recruit. My new sailor called last week and immediately I could tell he was sick. On the previous two phone calls home he had been able to keep it from me, but he had been sick since week 2. It's called bootcamp crud and it takes a toll on them to muster the strength and courage to fight through. My son served as an encourager to others who were struggling and he said that there are those who just don't give a care whether they make others sick spreading germs all around the barracks, but there are those who will come alongside your recruit and help them push through! Prayers going up and before you know it you will all be hearing those "I'm a SAILOR calls!"

Hey all,

I am sorry that someone feels like we were picking on her son. However, I must point out that if he was indeed that ill, he has the option to go to medical and get SIQ'd. At least then the rest of the division doesn't get dinged for him being sick. I know none of our SRs want to admit that they are ill, but it is something that in the real game could cost people lives. I guess that is where the pride and maturity come in, do you risk yourself or the whole crew? My hubs said he is miserable, most of them are tired and feel like death. But when you are so ill you cannot do your job, you either have to dig deep and get it done or seek help without jeopardizing others. By the end of this trial, I hope that most if not all will learn this. Sometimes being on a team means being put on the bench too.
Now, my definition of a troublemaker aka lil turd, are the guys/gals/kids that can't keep their mouths shut when told, don't do their jobs, and generally don't give a sh*t about losing calls or costing our SR's their privileges. If you are sick, than that cannot be helped, but I explained my views on that above.

Ok, just got two letters written over a 4 day span...
He said the problem with their div seems to be some immaturity and struggling with authority. He said the RDC's are reasonable but some of the "kids" don't realize that yet.
He promises to cuddle with me for the rest of his life when we aren't apart- w/out whining about it too!!
They met with the classifier on 3-2 DOT (wk-day Day Of Training), and his rate as HM and A school in GL stays the same. As of 9/1 he didn't know the date for BS21 yet. He also said that on 9/3 they were moving into a brand new ship (Liz had mentioned this earlier in the week). He said they will be the first graduating div. from it. He did say not to worry about the address, they will still get mail to them. And lastly he said they had an OK week and hoped to get a call soon.

His letter was positive and rather long so I am a happy girl today! Plus I went to the salon this morning and have a great hair cut! Have a good day ladies!
