Hi Trish - welcome! So glad to see you helping on this group. I owe you!!!

FYI: I recommend booking hotel and rental car asap, as those do not have cancellation fees up to 48 hrs before you arrive. I like to advise families to wait until the half way mark before purchasing airfare (make sure they have been there at least 4 wks, maybe even 5 wks). Lots of things can happen - medical setbacks, test setbacks, etc. The Navy recommends buying refundable tickets - they are crazy! Those cost $400 to $600 more per person! It is more reasonable to purchase normal or budget tickets, then just pay the $100 change fee if you need to delay your trip (if their PIR date gets pushed back) or if for some reason you need to cancel entirely (for any reason), you have credit with that airline for one year (less change fee, and if you cancel before boarding time). So... you want to book at least 14 days before you want to leave in order to get decent prices, 21 days before to get even better deals and 28 days (4 wks) to get the best airfare prices. I travel for my job and I book my own travel, so I have a little practice at this. Hope this helps

Hello moms/wives of PIR of 10/15! My son will have his PIR this Friday, he has completed battlestations and I just got the sailor call. I wanted to pop in, as it wasn't that long ago I was in your shoes, alot of unknown. There are some fantastic ladies on this site that helped my group (who is just a little bit crazy, right Sobe?) make it through this journey called boot camp. Whatever help I can provide, I am more than happy. I will check in with you, and if you want, you can email me too. Hang on ladies, while it will be a bumpy ride, it will be so very worth it!

Want to be able to know who's in what division and PIR group? Most of us update our User ID on this site when we know which division our loved one is in. Ship numbers are important for mailing letters, but not so much for anything else. Here's what my User ID used to look like when my son was in boot camp:

It's easy to change, go to the upper right hand corner and click on your settings and you'll find the spot.

I added two discussions for all of you. One has some very cool info regarding those in a 900 division (for this PIR group, that will be Division 948), and the other is about Grad & Go's (those who leave boot camp during PIR weekend). I highly suggest you look at both.

Yea Pink Helmet! I'm so happy you got the box! I know it is sad but you're right. I noticed my son's handwriting on the box. Okay, I do still have the box! At least his clothes didn't smell!! (lol) And I know what you mean. We need the letter now!
