Hello!
FireTeamLeaderWife aka FTLW here!
My Sailor PIR’d on 05/26/2011. He is a Seabee Reservist. I have been an AF Reservist wife for 27 + years…I know …not Navy…but I am familiar with military life! We have been through two Deployments…one right after 9/11 and most recently a year ago…our son enlisted while Hubby was in Iraq. This site was a Godsend and helped me get through not only our sons BC experience but my husbands and my separation for 6 months.
I am a “veteran” mom on the PIR groups mostly. I have been on them now for the last year and we have 7-8 PIR groups running at the same time.
I will check in here to see if I can answer any questions and lend support. There will be a few other veteran moms along to lend a hand and support you all through your PIR experience. Others drop in occasionally too…plus we are always looking for more to “join the ranks”. Things change in the military and we like to give out the most current info that we can so moms that have just gone through this help a lot.
I have a lot of Discussions with information to provide you along the way. I will post as the subjects come up! Please ask any and all questions…there are NO dumb ones Folks!
Welcome! Hang on for the ride!
If you are looking at the Navy Lodge for PIR call the hotel directly, don't book online or at the 800 number (it is just easier). Make sure you tell them you are coming for PIR or graduation that Friday and they will give you the discounted rate. Yes, they will ask you for your SRs name and rate, it is ok to give them that information. The reservation is made in your SRs name, but no problem with you checking in or paying for the room yourself. The Navy Lodge is not on base, but it is located in the family housing subdivision.
It is a great hotel to stay at if you are looking for a clean place to shower and sleep. It does not have a restaurant or swimming pool, but when we were there for PIR we didn't need either. We ate at recommended restaurants and were out sightseeing all the time.
The Navy Gateways Inn is on the base, and you must have an active duty military ID to stay there. At any time you leave the hotel you must be with the person who has the military ID, you cannot "walk around" by yourself.
As far as booking flights. I would start looking and booking as soon as you can, just make sure you buy the "insurance" to be able to change the date if needed. Southwest had no fee for changing flights you just have to pay the difference in ticket price if there is any.
