Trav'smom: So very sorry....I know he must be very disappointed, but so glad he has another plan. This was just beyond his control....but what a shame that he made it so far through bootcamp before this was decided :-( Hoping that he will take the training and discipline he learned and be able to use it in the next chapter of his life! Blessings to your son and to you all!
Well...I finally heard from my son today - he called! I feel that we should not only share the good but also the bad news.
About 3 or 4 weeks ago, he called because they needed a doctors name from 2007. He saw him for maybe 3-4 months for depression (bullying at school)...well, that doctor left the practice and moved to Texas! Anyway...to make a long story short, after going through the worst of boot camp and thinking he was 2 weeks from graduating...they just told him he was getting medically discharged.
I feel very guilty for the part of me that is happy he is coming home. His dad, step-mom, and uncle were in the Navy, and really wanted it for him too! My husband and I wanted school, and now he does too. Fortunately, we don't have to pay for anything but books if he goes were my husband works...which is the plan. I feel bad for him and his dream. The sad thing is, his dad was more upset than he was...I hope he comes to terms with it. It was beyond his control, and shouldn't feel bad about himself.
Sorry for rambling!
They can fly out of OHare or Midway.
Dianne, Thanks for the message. Do you know if they fly out of O'Hare?
Thanks Ellen. Your information is very useful!
Proudmom, Sorry I wasn't clear on where the visitors center is located. It is just outside the main gate, where you will meet your sailor, so you are not going back on to the base. We went back to our hotel (Navy Lodge) for a couple of hours then went to the visitors center about 2pm to wait for my son to call.
Trav'sMom: Totally understand!
BradsMom: You can bring those clothes to him to hold on to for about 3 weeks-- when he would be allowed to wear them. Phasing up is when they earn the right to move to the next phase. They have to accomplish certain "things" for each phase and then they are moved up. He has to be in uniform until then.
KatyM: You can get out to the airport in the wee hours of the morning to wait with her. Even if she is on a 6:30 flight, you would get a few hours with her and could wait at the gate with her until she leaves (unless on a charter flight...then no family visits). They should have from Friday after PIR until 8 or 9 pm with you.
