Wow, JMT. Amazing....I'm just so very sorry that happened...what a huge letdown for both of them. And for him to be turned away when on the list...nice! UGH! Hope the rest of your weekend with your sailor goes much better.
This is just so sad. With only 7 divisions graduating how much harm could be done by allowing a child to go in. Was there a 4th person on the list? I really hope they realize this is a bad idea and at least allow maybe 6 people on the list. Do they not realize how much this hurts absolutely everyone? It doesn't just hurt the families who can't bring a brother or sister or grandparent. It also hurts the economy up there. Fewer people at PIR means fewer airfares, fewer hotel rooms, less food sold, less souvenirs sold from the NEX, the list goes on and on. Really I don't see where anyone benefits from this at all.
Thanks diannep. Actually my SR had pre-ordered a package that included the DVD. So yes it will be some consolation, but obviously not like being there in the moment.
I forgot to mention this: When my ex and my son arrived at PIR they were told that NEITHER of them were on the list!!!! When I found out they didn't get in, I approached the officials at the entrance, waving my form letter, trying to prove they were on the list. It was only then they admitted that yes my ex was on the list, but not my son. MY EX WAS INITIALLY TURNED AWAY BY MISTAKE!
I'm so very very sorry, JMTMom. I can imagine the disappointment in your son, not to mention his dad....awful. I'm hoping in future that the RDCs make sure the SRs know that if the person is not on the list, they will not get in...and they need to go over the age limit....what a pain.
Thanks so much for sharing this...makes our work harder in that we need to make sure that future PIR groups write to their SRs if the names on the form letter are incorrect....and....such as happened in your case, they need to know not to take anyone off....
Hope that the rest of the day went well....did you order the PIR DVD? I hope so. That would at least be something for both the 15 yr old and his dad to watch.
You're so welcome FTLW! I'm happy to save future families the stress.
So a value tip for future Navy moms is to make sure they check with their SR a couple weeks before PIR about what names they turned in for their final list. I have learned that the form letter means nothing; they will not honor it.
They decided to go back to the hotel. We had already designated Friday after PIR as time for my SR to spend with his dad. Since we knew my SR would only have about an hour after the ceremony, my ex decided to just go back to the hotel and wait for my SR's call after he processed into A School at Great Lakes. Luckily my SR is attending A School at Great Lakes, so everyone gets time with him anyway. But I really feel bad for my young son because he missed both brothers' graduations from basic training.
They had a sign posted about no extras at the door. The sign also said that anyone not on the list would be required to go back to their vehicle. So it looks like there is no longer a "holding" area.
