Unfortunately it is different for everyone and only your son will know the answer to that. Some are grad and go others stay in GL for additional training.
bsobo: They usually don't know when they are actually flying out until a couple of weeks before PIR. We always advise you all to book through Sunday if possible, just in case.
msomodara: Depends on if your sailor stays in GL for A School or flies out. If staying in GL, he/she moves over there right after PIR and calls you for pickup 3-5 hours later from A School base. Then they have daytime liberty with you through the weekend. If flying out, most will leave on Sat, sometimes Sun. So you would have PIR day with them, and then you can meet them at the airport on Sat and wait with them. They are usually bussed there in the wee hours of Sat. morning (lie 2 a.m.) to wait for their flights.
We were fortunate when catching the shuttle back to the hotel. We didn't have to wait and he only had the 3 of us on board with him.
Yes, If anyone would like to add the MeetNGreet to the events calendar on the right of this page, here is how you do it:
Click on Nov 3rd. Then ADD EVENT. Here is the MeetNGreet info:
PIR 11/04 MeetNGreet
Ramada Inn Waukegan
Thurs, Nov 3 6-8 pm
200 N. Green Bay Rd
847-244-2400
Everyone with a sailor PIRing the next day is welcome, including children.
Appetizers served/cash bar (but you can bring your own drink). Ramada sets it all up.
Meet & Greet - I'm thinking I read that one of the hotels holds a meet & greet night for the families attending PIR but I've read so many blogs I probably won't be able to find it again. Any veteran moms have any experience with that?
I found that flying through Milwaukee was a lot cheaper that O'hare.
We stayed at the Homewood Suites, it was really nice and very friendly. They did have a shuttle which was great and it beats the long line of traffic going through the gate, but if you are ready to leave before others the van has to wait for everyone before leaving. My son had to report back to his ship because they were moving across the street. We had to come back and get him.
