lizza: Be sure to check out Southwest Airlines too into Milwaukee (or Chicago Midway) if they fly from your hometown. No change fee, first 2 bags ship for free. 45 minutes from GL (Milwaukee), Midway is the furthest airport (an hour) but one that the sailors may fly out for A School (other one is OHare).
Car rental is usually cheaper in Milwaukee also....oh....and no traffic in Milwaukee!
Sounds like the news is getting better, Mike'sMom. That's great!
I was wondering has anyone ever used Spirit airlines? I never travel and i do not know what i am doing..I know i need to start making travel plans for Nov 16 is just around the corner..they have the cheapest rates on airfare it is 236 round trip from Texas to chicago..
Mike'sMom - That is great news. Both for the medical thing and the RAP duty. Make dang sure he takes advantage of that. Him being a Nuke means he won't be eligible for a long time (since his school is so long), but just remember it's out there.
Just curious, what flavor of Nuke is he wanting? Machinist Mate (MM), Electronic Technician (ET), Electrician Mate (EM)?
btw: the 1st course they teach in Nuke school is how to properly write a check to all the people that they owe. j/k, thought this was really funny.
Saw the recruiter, and am feeling a little better. He said that if he's been assigned to a division, then it's probably no big deal. The fact that he waited until Sunday down time was also a good thing. If there was an issue during Moment of Truth, he would have been put in a holding unit, and he would have called us to tell us that. Again, no news is good news.
His recruiter also said that if there was an issue, we could get a medical waiver - this happens all the time. It may delay his PIR, but should not interfere with his future career.
You are correct about RAP, his recruiter confirmed that, but also said that the RDCs don't really have all the information about this. He also said that he would be happy to have him work there after A school.
I feel a little bit better, but am still a bit nervous. Thank you all for the information, well wishes and prayers
I am so grateful to have this website and that I found this group. My Son's PIR is 11/16/12.
I would have to agree with what Craig and Lala have said about the RAP duty. When my son was in BC, he was told that he could work at the recruiters during his leave (He was able to come home directly from BC, due to Christmas stand down) When we checked with the recruiter about it, we were told that they are only allowed to do that after they have finished with A school. I would assume that since they haven't phased up, that this could be the reason. That's just my thought, though.
Hi mikesmom my son Tyler also left on Sept 18th ship 02 div 901 PIR 11-16; I hope you hear something soon my thoughts are with you. I am like you I need all information I worry so much not knowing things. Were you at the Oath ceremony on the 18th at MEPS my daughter and I were there and stayed until the bus left very proud and sad moment!
I totally agree with Lala about the "RAP" duty. Working in the recruiting office only happens after "A" or "C" school.
I know it's way early for you guys, heck you're recruits are just starting boot camp. However, we love helping you guys out. So, above in the "Pages" area (under the members pictures above) are is a post called "RAP (Recruiting Assistance leave Program) - MILPERSMAN 1050-220 info". Book mark that link to help your sailor when they starts their "A" school. It's 5 days of "Free" leave, which is a good thing.
All sailors should take advantage of RAP duty, but you will find most don't. The reason is most just never put in for it.
