WELCOME to PIR 11/16/2012

OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance. Please take the time
to read the OPSEC and Community Guidelines. A quick note here: Last Names of Sailors/Recruits are not allowed on this site. If it is in your username you will need to change your username. If yours is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended. First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

You may talk about your sons rating/ job that they plan to school for. :-) It is good that you ask...and great that you are concerned about OPSEC. General info such as his rating is find though. Detailed specific info like last names, future movements, specific training (BC is okay, with the exception of Battlestations their final test...no dates posted and the recruits will not be allowed to talk about it...they sign a confidentiality agreement), future port arrivals, deployment dates/locations... Those are OPSEC concerns...please feel free to ask and read through the guidelines. They help a lot so you won't feel paranoid...eventually it will become second nature for you.

Rate is their enlisted level...it also determines their pay grade level. Navy enlisted have "rate" and Navy Officers have " rank".)
Enlisted personnel are E-1 to E-9. The highest rate you can have in BC is E-3...this is of course after they have earned the right to be called Sailors :-).
E-1's have "Recruit" after their group.
E-2's have "Apprentice" after their group.
E-3's have "...man" after their group.
Such as:
Seaman Recruit E-1
Seaman Apprentice E-2
Seaman E-3

However, in BC they are all referred to as Seaman Recruit (SR) or simply Recruit. They have a ball cap they wear with Recruit on it...after they officially become Sailors they will exchange it for one that says NAVY. This moving ceremony takes place after they successfully complete Battlestations on the last Training Day of BC.

My son is in the Nuke program, I am not to familiar yet, but I am learning. :)

It is okay to talk about what their rate will be :-) My Sailor is an AO, Aviation Ordnanceman and my son-in-law is an IT, computer tech or something along those lines lol. My son, 19 wants to go in as air rescue swimmer in the next year or so.

My son is in Ship 02 Div 901. So excited, for PIR to hurry up and get here already. It'll take every ounce of restraint that I have on that day not to run down there and hug him!! lol.

My son is ship 11 div 006. Anyone else in this division? Son arrived at BC on 9-18. I got the kid in a box on the 21st. No letter yet but called his recruiter for his ship/div info.
Comment by DebbiL on September 25, 2012 at 7:22pm

Now I'm a little paranoid - is it ok to talk about my son's rate (that's their job, right?) I know my son is really excited about what he's going to do, but will the OPSEC info above, I'm reluctant to talk about it...

Comment by DebbiL on September 25, 2012 at 7:09pm

@ zach's mom - YES! My son is also in Ship 09 Div 001.  I sent you a friend request...
