@tammy just friend requested you with the info!!
Congratulations to all the New Sailors!
If you are not feeling comfortable with driving then I would take a shuttle/taxi.
RTC opens Gate 8 for PIR at 6:30 AM. I drove from the Navy Lodge and got in line about 7. It wasn't too bad as we were all in line so it flowed, but remember they stop each vehicle to check for the Vehicle Gate Pass, ID and insurance/rental agreement. We had 9 divisions and the place was pretty filled up. We still got on the floor level seating on an end about half way up (there is balcony seating looking down and the railing can sometimes get in the way of view and pics.) The plus I liked about driving was that I could leave when I wanted too and I didn't have far to walk from the structure into the Visitors Center.
I had a GPS on the car but I had also driven the route the day before (was there a day and a half early). The minus I guess would be that I always hear that the shuttles can get you there faster because they by pass traffic. If you get an early shuttle. Depends on the hotel I guess.
When you take a Shuttle it drops you off outside Gate 8 and you have to walk onboard RTC. It is about 100 yards from the Gate to the Visitors Center. In inclement weather not so fun.
It's preference and what you are feeling. I have a Post with Maps and such that I will add later.
It is always a good idea to Print up a Vehicle Gate Pass even if you take a taxi to PIR. You will need it when you return your Sailor in your car. If you do not have one you may not drive your vehicle onto Base and will have to leave your Sailor off at the Gate...plan to return them earlier if this happens as they will have farther to walk.
Final question for the expert moms....we are renting a car, BUT would you recommend taking a taxi the morning of PIR, to make sure we get there on time due to traffic & such, and not being familiar with this area at all???
