For those wanting to stay in a Candlewood Suites, as DramaboysMom did, there is one very close to Residence Inn, only 4 miles from the base.  Residence also allows pets.

We stayed at the Candlewood Suites in Wheeling about 20 miles from GL. We are used to traveling the area, and with in a mile of my cousin, so that was a plus for us. Plus we had the dog and they let us have her. They had a wonderful kitchenette, clean room, one kingsize bed per room. Not sure yet were we are staying, I fly a little by the seat of my pants. Since we visit Chi-town often, and drive there a lot we aren't too worried about hotels. But I would agree that Waukegan is a little, well, underwhelming. ( Is that politically correct?) For those that don't know much about the eateries, if you are gonna be in Chicago and like pizza, Giordano's has the best deep dish Chicago style pizza. If you are looking to travel to the city anytime, there is a wonderful Jewish deli called 11th City Diner (http://www.elevencitydiner.com/) And there are numerous Portillo's (http://www.portillos.com/) with great Chicago style hot dogs( this place has a Chocolate Cake Shake that is to DIE for!). And of course the Miracle Mile, Rush Street, Navy Pier, The Museums, The Aquarium, The Planetarium, Second City, Blue Man Group... and on and on...
Tamme, which Candlewood did you stay at?
