For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

I enjoy reading the information provided on this site. It has been extremely encouraging and helpful to me since our son began this journey.

Comment by diannep on November 20, 2015 at 5:30pm: MSmom: As long as your sailor is with you, you can shop in the NEX on base....but we suggest you go to the one off base (Green Bay Rd....near RTC) because it is larger. For those staying at Navy Lodge, there is a very small NEX that the Lodge will give you a pass for so you can shop in there if you want to without your sailor with you.

I don't believe you would be forced to leave RTC once your sailor leaves to move over to A School base, but you may want to go back to the hotel, get some lunch and rest before picking up your A School sailor on that base later....once you have your sailor, I would imagine you will be very busy having fun!

I was not sure if parents could go to the NEX on base. Last, my son will be attending A school in GL and I know we will have to wait several hours until he checks in with his school. What do parents normally do during this time-are they required to leave the base? Thanks for any help with these questions.

Comment by diannep on November 20, 2015 at 12:40pm: By the way, wendi. We went up there the first week in FEB the yr our sailor graduated. Snow everywhere....we are not snow drivers being from S FL. We had no issues at all. Just beware of the forecast and if you really get nervous about driving, you can call Sarge to take his shuttle (but it is not cheap...usually more economical to rent a car rather than use ths shuttles/taxis). 847 212 0246

Comment by diannep on November 20, 2015 at 12:39pm: Yes, they do, wendiwags. They are very good about keeping the roads clean. I don't think you will have any problem finding GL....it is pretty easy. Get directions from your car rental company.

I have rented a car and I have to admit, I'm already a nervous wreck about driving from O'Hare to Navy Lodge. I will be bringing 2 rolls of quarters for the tolls, but I'm concerned about driving conditions. Does Chicago keep the roads pretty clear? Are there marked signs to lead me? I get in during the day light so I do have that working for me.
