OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

N4M's Community Guidelines
and
OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

I guess since we're talking about it, my next letter to my SR should have a reminder about a meeting spot.

KaelaW:  Yep, the hugs come within 30 seconds of the LIBERTY CALL!  Good idea like Justine said to prearrange a place to meet.  We thought we would be smart (since we didn't prearrange...sigh)....and wait in the bleachers so HE could find US!  Didn't work....we were the only ones sitting in empty bleachers and no sign of him.  We finally found him in the crowd talking to his shipmates!

Comment by Justine on October 28, 2015 at 9:11pm
KaelaW-PIR begins promptly at 0900 and lasts approximately 90 minutes. My advice to everyone going is to make a plan with your sailor to try to meet at a specific spot. It is quite chaotic when everyone pours down from the bleachers. My son stayed in his general area and moved to the back wall so we knew where to meet.

Does anyone have info on the best hotel to stay in? I want to be as close as possible because I do not drive. By the way I am so excited and congrats to everyone else and their loved ones I am so proud of all our Sailors.

Ladies: FYI, 2 scenarios going on for Thanksgiving.  Those SRs with a family member there (pre-arranged Adopt a Sailor) can leave for the day with that family member; Those sailors in the 12/04 and 12/11 PIR groups who have no family there are eligible to be "adopted" by community groups (churches included) who provide a Thanksgiving dinner for them in a community location....they are bussed to these locations and usually there will be some video of these outings posted by the hosting group afterwards for family members to view!  It is a wonderful day for them....and the hosting group members will allow them to use their cell phones to call family that day so don't leave your phones for a second on Thanksgiving Day!

Hmmmm, Mo.....don't think you will violate OPSEC by putting his last name in the RSVP which is just for Sarge's eyes, but if you are uncomfortable about that, please message or call Sarge and tell him that.  He will work it out.

Comment by Mo on October 28, 2015 at 1:44pm
Don't know if my question posted - to rsvp for sarges meet and greet the recruits division is a required field, as is last name. My recruit is in an 800 division and shares my last name- how should I go about rsvp without violating OPSEC ?

Good Morning!

Comment by CatMom509 on October 28, 2015 at 2:22am

Sheryl,

You don't receive an invitation to PIR.  Your name is just placed on an Access List with anyone else your SR wants to attend. Then when you show up with your state issued id, they compare it with the names on the list~~
