N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Navy Lodge vs. Navy Gateway Inn and Suites

The Navy Lodge is located in Base Housing (ungated) about a mile and a half from RTC. (RTC is a restricted base and does not have any lodging for traveling military leisure etc.). Civilians may stay there for PIR. You just give them your Recruits name. Make sure you have some form of valid picture ID for yourself (DL etc). Traveling to and fro from the NL is easy ass there is no security to pass through and it is close to base. They serve a brown bag breakfast.

The Navy Gateway Inn and Suites is located within the confines of TSC GL (Training Support Center Great Lakes where some of your Sailors will attend A school). It is about a mile from RTC as well in a different direction. If you are military or dependent military then you can stay there. In order for you to stay there as a civilian you must have clearance. You must request to stay there and they will take information and or send you paperwork to be filled out and returned and then clearance must be granted for a civilian to stay there. As a civilian you will be limited as to where you may go without your Sailor. If you have military ID, Active Reserve Dependent or someone staying with you does, then you will be able to move about more freely.

YOUR NEW SAILOR VISITING YOU AT THE HOTELS

Both areas are off limits to GL A school students with the exception being newly graduated Sailors on PIR weekend. The Rules state that they need to request and have an approved chit in order to visit you at the hotels. I KNOW this is firm for the NGIS but it keeps flip flopping for the NL so I will ask my fellow veteran moms to confirm the NL status on this matter.

Here is the "official" from the (link) Abridged Phased Liberty Policy TSC GL

    F. Liberty Boundaries and off-limits areas

           1) Regardless of liberty status, liberty is restricted to an area within a 300-mile radius of Naval Station Great Lakes. Sailors desiring to travel beyond 300 miles from NAVSTA Great Lakes or six hours travel time, must have an approved leave chit.

           2) Students are prohibited from entering Bldg 30 (Boorda Hall), Bldg 62 (Navy Gateway Inns and Suites), the 400 complex (with the exception of BEQ 439) and on-base housing (which includes the Navy Lodge) and Forest City Housing unless you are listed as a resident. During recruit graduation weekend from Recruit Training Command, if recruits attaching to to TSC-GL have family staying in the Navy Lodge or Gateway Inns and Suites, they will be required to route a special request chit to the OIC to be able to enter and meet the family at their room.

What is the difference (pros/cons) to Navy Lodge and Navy Inns and Suites? Proximity, ease of getting to/from PIR, etc.? Thank you

Huntersmom:  There is no harm in booking hotel now....no penalty if you have to cancel for any reason if you book direct (not sure of the travel sites).  Here are ones recommended on this site:

Navy Lodge (book in your SR's name if you do not have military ID)....reasonable, close to RTC....nothing fancy but clean and updated about a year ago.

Springhill Suites, Courtyard, Holiday Inn Express, Residence Inn.....all close to Sarge's MeetandGreet held for you the night before PIR.  4-5 miles from RTC.  Call direct and ask for Navy Graduation discount.  However, check online price too as one person said they found it cheaper online (but this was for Thanksgiving weekend).

If you book flights on Southwest Airlines, there is no change fee if you have to change for any reason.  Check into Milwaukee WI (45 min drive to GL) and Chicago-Midway (hour+ to GL depending on traffic).   They never charge a change fee and also 2 bags check for free.  They also throw in a discount rental car code.

Good Afternoon All !

My son's graduation date is Dec. 4. Wondering how early I should book flights and hotels. Any suggestions on good places to stay?

Moira, Since your son arrived on a Tuesday his PIR date could be the next PIR or the previous one.

Feel free to hang here until you receive your form letter, and if the date is the previous one you can drop this group and join the other.

Hi all, my son left for GR on 10/7 and we just received his form letter yesterday. It came on my husband's and my anniversary so I considered it a very cool gift! He is in Ship 06, Div 031. Happy that I finally have his mailing address and can start sending off letters. I was checking the mailbox each day waiting, but this morning that missing him sadness came back. I know he'll do well...just really miss having him around. A big thank you for being there...even though I don't get a lot of time to post, I do get to read others and it really helps!

Hi- my son left for GL on 10/6 so I think his PIR is 12/4 but I haven't gotten the letter yet, but 9 Fridays from when he left is 12/4? Anyone have any insight if this is right?
First time posting and so glad to read all the posts for the info and most of all to know you're not alone! So proud but so missing my son!

Hey everyone, I want to give you a "HEADS UP" to be prepared to possibly receive calls from your SRs this weekend! The call will show up as "847", "Waukegan, IL", "Pay Phone", or "Government" or anything else that may be unfamiliar. If it is a sales call, just politely tell them "No, thank you." Please also let your family members know about this too~~

When you do receive a call, could you please post which division is calling also, so other moms/loved ones know to expect a call? Now if anyone in that division doesn't receive a call, it could be your SR is on watch and it is up to the RDCs on whether that SR gets to make-up the call~~

During this time in Boot Camp, please keep your cell phones charged, ready, and with you all the time---upstairs, downstairs, out in the backyard, in the bathroom, out to get the mail, of course, out on errands. If you are going to a loud restaurant or a movie theater, remember to put it on "vibrate" and put in your pocket or some place you can feel it. They can call during the week or weekend, so just be prepared: 6:00 am - 6:00 pm (Pacific/West Coast); 7:00 am - 7:00 pm (Mountain time); 8:00 am - 8:00 pm (Central/Great Lakes time); 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (Eastern Coast).
