splash: Good comeback comment to your friend about the sexual assault issue. I would like to know where anyone can live/work/go to school, etc where the possibility of that happening is not alive and well.....if there is such a place, I'll move there for many reasons, but believe it doesn't exist this side of heaven!
Jennifer: No one understands exactly the same way as a mother....I didn't give birth to my son (adopted--3 days old then, took him home from the hospital), but I felt the same way when he was there. However him being one of the older ones (23), and having lived in another city on his own for 18 mos, made it a bit easier for me.
Polo: I so agree with what you said about the "olden days" and faith then....there are pluses and negatives for the internet now....so many great things, so many not great things. I think the thing I miss the most now is the face to face time with friends, or even that phone call, rather than an email or text message. We all seem to be on the hamster's treadmill these days just to get through life!
Good Day!
"The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
the plans of His heart to all generations."
Psalm 33:11
Gals,
I'm just so happy that my Sailor daughter found Navy for Moms and sent me the link before she left for the Navy! This place here and all the moms, dads, and other helpful family members has always been a safe place for me of encouragement and understanding. Only other Navy families truly can empathize with the Navy journey.
So please try to say to yourselves, "They just don't understand....and ones who aren't moms really don't understand." Don't let that put a wedge in an otherwise good relationship. Our responses to others affect our own peace and calm, so don't let others stress you out when they just don't understand.
Polo,
You're so welcome!!
Bug5280. The comment your "friend" made is really cold. No compassion there at all! It is a definate loss that most do not understand.
I have also struggled with mom's that compare our situations to their child going of to college. I have to tell myself that they are really trying to be helpful and compassionate and that they really do not understand the difference. On top of not being able to talk to or see our children...I want to tell them about the gas chamber and Battlestations 21 and explain that there is a difference. And the military does own our children. BUT...The most irritating thing that people have said to me is...there is so much sexual assault in the military...aren't you woried about your daughter? and I kindly remind them the same issue exists in college dorms. And truthfully I think more often. I have sent a child off to college. It is VERY different. I am also thankful for this site and the support we all have here. Just reading about what others are feeling is helpful. One of my best friends has a son leaving for the Air Force Nov 3rd. She is having the same feelings.
