He'll have to tell you his rate, no way for us to know.

Uh, I'm sorry, but you can and will have to handle the situation if the school is 12 weeks. It is rare for an A school to be exactly what the estimated seat time is; there can be holds waiting to class up, or other training that isn't known until he checks in, such as indoc. Four weeks is a rough estimate. Always, always expect it to be more.

That goes for every sailor going to an A school, long or short. The length of the A school is NOT how long they will be at the school command. No one gets to the school and starts the next Monday. Never seen it happen. They get there, check in, and go through an introductory phase. That can take a few days, and of they are waiting for a class to form up, even weeks. For example, ET A school is roughly 28 weeks/ months. But they also go through indoc and an introductory tech training, and then have to wait for classes, then wait for orders. An ET can be at Great Lakes 12 to 18 months for a "six month" school. Everyone needs to take a deep breath about A school, and realize this is a hurry and wait situation.

You are all strong, you can handle this. Be patient, be flexible, and be ready to learn that your recruit has only a partial picture at this point.

lllinibeam: Is he an YN or LS, by chance? If so, their school length is maximum 37 days, but most finish much earlier than that (average is 4-5 weeks). Will he go to Meridian MS?

Yes, I'm so glad that AntiM (former Navy and family Navy background) posted this, Steve'sMom. I totally agree. This is another motivational tool used by the RDC's to flush out the culprit. It won't be comfortable for any there until the guilty one is found, but keep your travel plans because they won't set them all back. But they want to make sure others know how serious this was....and the cost in police and fire manpower that responded. So they will push it to the nth degree to make them understand that....better days are coming!
And, welcome to the site!

@ Illinibeam13, each A school is a different length. Some of them are six months or more. Which rate/rating (job)?

The fire alarm is probably not going to set back an entire division, that would cost the Navy far too much money. It is within the realm of possibility, but not probability. No matter what, his A school seat is secure. And yes, they will all be punished until they cough up who did it. Someone knows. The rest of them just have to get sick of it enough to give the guy up. They will, they always do. The threat of being set back is a srong incentive.

Been there, done something similar in A school, long story about Marines in their underwear in the women's barracks.

There are surprisingly few security cameras in BC. That's what the guys on watch are for, eyes on the base. whoever was standing roving watch that night is going to be answering a lot of questions, even if they saw nothing.

The oath does not make some young men and women any smarter. Sigh.

Steve'smom - That is horrible! Its hard for me to understand why someone would do something like that. I can see why you would be upset. Please keep us updated on what happens. Will this affect all of Ship 04? Don't worry about your son's job. Recruits get set back in BC all the time because of illness, injuries or trouble passing some of the requirements. This should not affect his job. Susan

For those of you from warmer states (like me!) who may need to buy a coat for PIR. Check out jcpenney's website today because they are having a blowout 1-day sale. They have some beautiful coats (such as cashmere blends), normally $200+, on sale for less than 1/2 price. Many are available in the stores too, but some are just online buys.

Hi Everyone, New to the site. My son is ship4div19. I recieved a call from him last night. Very upset to say the least. Someone did a stupid thing of pulling a fire alarm for a prank !! No one in his group, they were all in their racks studying. Brought out 4 firetrucks and 9 police cars. Needless to say the person did not own up to it so... all were punished. They were told that they were going to be set back two weeks. That the person can be charged with a felony. He said that personnel were trying to get finger prints from the area and process them to see if the person could be found. I would think there were security cameras around that would have picked this stuff up. I'm so mad right now that if I came across this person I think I would do them in !! He told me not to make any plans or book his flight to school until this was figured out. We were driving to PIR from Maryland, getting to bring him home from Dec 17-27th.II cant believe that someone would take the oath that they have and still not consider what they are doing serious. I hope they are found and punished severely. I know this isn't a very good opening post from me. I'm just shocked, hurt, and discusted by this. He told me this could affect 250 people !! He had to wait to leave for bc because there would not be a position open for him at school. He said if he misses out on his spot, he dont know what will happen.

Received a short letter from H today. I was written on Veteran's Day. She sounds good. Said she was doing her swimming test and a written test on Friday. She said that if she didn't pass she would be set back a week. She said she wasn't too worried about the test. She said she would have a short time on Tues, Thurs, and Sun to write.
