OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I got a form letter today to Adopt my SR for Thanksgiving Day - I knew they had a program after reading Honor, Courage and Commitment but didn't think it applied to family. IT DOES! We live within 6 hours of GL so my SR thought it a good idea and sent us a form letter requesting us to do so. Of course we are and we are thrilled to pieces! Reservations are already made so I'm spending Thanksgiving with my boy.

Oh Betsy! That's wonderful! I'm tickled for you - see you said you wanted a phone call and low and behold!

I GOT A PHONE CALL!!!!!! He wants to come home for Christmas, he sounded awesome! He said he passed his initial PT and swimming test, so far. Woohoo! I'm on cloud nine! He said that I could write as many letters as I want to him (he had previously said, "mom, don't write me everyday, lol") He got 3 of my letters so far.

Anti M, your knowledge is very important to us. Thank you for helping us through.

Hey, I still learn a lot as the details change. However, the Navy is always the same in some regards.
Comment by Lori_KingsBay_USSRI_Radio on November 6, 2010 at 12:07pm
We appreciate you Anti M; we're learning as we go and certainly do no want to cause harm to any of our SR's or Sailors.

LOL, there's a reason I don't post to the new moms groups very much, I'm still too much of an old sailor. I get a little crusty, but know I support you all! Just yell at me if I get to be too much. I don't mind. I don't want to scare anyone, just please, be thoughtful and careful.

As your recruit progresses to sailor, through school and to the fleet, OPSEC becomes more and more critical. That's Operational Security. Here, begin with PERSEC. That's Personal Security. This site and group creates a lot of warm feelings and folks tend to share a lot in unity. Unfortunately, this site is not an official Navy site, and as such, is not secure in the least. It isn't as much a matter of TBTB reading the site and harassing your recruit, but anyone in the world can read here. Anyone includes some extremely bad people who wish to do your sailors harm. If they can't get at them, family members are the next target. This is a sad, harsh truth, and I know that you're all new and tender, but you must get used to thinking before posting.

I had a high clearance when I was an ET, plus I was raised in the Navy, so I've had ot pounded into my head. You'll hear me talk about my ET2 out in the fleet (acquired kid) and my nuke nephew rather than using than using their names. If you friend me and see my photos, you wont' see my active duty sailors, at their requests. The Navy does use their full name sin official press releases and on the official sites and FB pages, but the Navy has an entire PR and security force to decide what to release when. We do not.

Wendi, we did that too and got back $374. We can re-activate too. It's nice that the insurance companies really do work with you, if you ask.
