OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security)
(Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips)

This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way.

The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

 • Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for your personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

That is a great idea because with him staying in great Lakes you should get to spend Saturday and Sunday with him if he doesn't get to come home. I hope he and all of them get to come home for Christmas :)

Comment by AnthonysMom on November 5, 2012 at 10:09am

i am hoping he can come home for the holidays and we will buy his ticket.. he has a diving contract so he will have to return to chicago for dive prep.  if he can't come home for the holidays we are going to him for christmas. i don't know how all of this will work and i wish they would make a decision sooner than later on what they are going to do for the holidays with the kids so i can buy him a ticket. if not i will be there friday night on the first flight out after work.

Good morning everyone, Diannep it looks like we were both responding at the same time :-) Facetime is very much like skype but it is from one smartphone to another, no computer is needed. It can be done as long as there is a wifi signal. Or at least that is how ours work. I am not sure if there would be a signal in the PIR hall or not. Most bases have hot spots but if not it should work at most hotels. Some do charge for that connection but it would be well worth it :)

Comment by Lala Ribbon Queen PIR Ribbons on November 5, 2012 at 9:52am

I am so sorry AnthonysMom, Facetime should not be a problem at all as long as your family members at PIR have smart phones and a signal to do that. If it doesn't work in the PIR hall they should be able to do facetime with you by going back to their hotel after PIR where there should be a signal. Make sure you send those correct names to your recruit and when he gets to call you be sure and let him know how important it is for that list to be correct. If there are only two people going I would also leave your name on the list just in case something changes at the last minute and you are able to go. If you are not on that list you won't get in even if there are only two names on the list. I hope your work has a change of heart :)
