I have rented a car as well. I like having the ability to go where I want and when I want. It is also easier when traveling with my little grandaughter and all the equipment needed for a trip with a toddler. Plus I am going to have enough luggage to last me the almost two weeks I will be traveling as I am going to Boston to see my parents after Chicago before returning to Germany. I am going to stay at a hotel by the airport the first night and take the shuttle to the hotel as I arrive after dark and don't want to be trying to make a 40+ min drive in the dark in an unfamiliar area. My daughter arrives the next morning so I will go back to the airport and meet her flight and pick up the rental car then and drive to GL in the daylight.

Received our first letter from our daughter, it was written Christmas Day, she sounded good in the letter and that the food they were served that day was Prime Rib, Ham, Turkey and all kinds of great amenities. They were woken up that morning with Alvin and the Chipmunks singing "Christmas don't be late"! She said some were crying, she thought is was funny because her dad would always wake them up on Christmas morning singing that song!

Keeping her in prayer and motiviation as much as I can, counting days until PIR 02/18!~

I am driving there, but am sure the parking is going to be expensive as well!  We haven't picked a hotel yet, but will be making reservations in the next couple of days.

I wanted to stop by and say Hi!!! I haven't been on as much because of computer problems but I am still connected through my cell. My computer should be fixed within 2 days. I have several orders for ribbons from your group so if anyone else would like to order just let me know. You can click on my name and go to my page and send me a friend request and I will get the info to you quickly. You can also see pics of the ribbons on my page as well if you scroll down near the bottom of the page. The ribbon are to wear to PIR< suitable for men and women. they are a great way to show your pride and support for your sailor. They are a great way to recognize other N4M members and they make a great keepsake. They are only $5.00 each and no matter how many you order shipping is only $5.00 for Priority shipping. I make the ribbons as my way of paying it forward and do not profit in making them. This site has been a lifeline for me since my daughter joined the Navy. I appreciate all of you and what you are going through. Thanks so much for being so kind. LaLa

neilsnavymom:  I understand that taxi fare there is about $50.  Some go over to the Metra and take the train into GL.  The station is right near the base and the hotels. That would be cheaper but may take a bit more work and a little longer.  We rented a car...not the cheapest route but it worked well for us to have it there.

I made reservations today.  We are flying in to O'Hare Airport.  What will be the best, easiest, cheapest way to the Great Lakes hotels?  I thought the airport was closer.

Oh... and we are patiently waiting for letter #2... hopefully this week!

Our recruit has been gone three weeks, also!  ;-(  Boy-o-boy, is it hard. I never knew i8t could be so challenging from this end.

We made a road trip to a nearby college town and on the way, we stopped at a LARGE truckstop. They had an entire wall of pins (apparently truck drivers are big pin collectors) and they had every branch of the miliary... pin for a lot of the different ranks or jobs, as well.

We purchased Navy pins for the grandparents and for us. Wearing them every day helps us get through this time of separation.

That was one thing we've done recently that helped us still feel connected.

Dani, there is a discussion above about the MeetNGreet where you can RSVP.  It also directs you to the Ramada site with the info.  It will be held on 2/17, night before PIR, from 6-8, at the Ramada.  Go up to the discussion group above (hit "view all") and get your info!  It is a great place for all there for PIR to meet...including those not on N4Moms.  Anyone attending the PIR is welcome!
