One final thing y'all, well actually two, Arwen is the author of the code of conduct I posted above. I have been posting that for weeks, always with a note that I didn't know who the author was...but that it is great information...but I should have guessed it would be her!!
Second, there are several fun questionaires in the discussion area you can send to your recruits that will give you much information about what is happening at boot camp, but will only take them 5 to 10 minutes to complete....a win-win situation.
Well I guess there are three, you can also get the information on how to order your the blue star flag which you can put in your window after PIR, but you want to order it now because it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get.
Wife64...I have never heard of a recruit getting in trouble for getting a hand drawn picture by a child...even the RDCs seem to draw the line there...lol!!
Say do you know about the paper chain fun....since they are so young...have them make a paper chain with the number of links until PIR...and then take a link off each day so they can visually see PIR get closer....you could even take a picture of them making it and taking a link off and embed it in your letter to send to your recruit...kids usually enjoy this and it helps them mark the time.
Be sure to read the rules of engagement for communicating with your recruit....it has many suggestions in it plus I made a little questionaire you can send to your recruit so they can tell you what is and is not acceptable in terms of mail in their division. Every RDC is a little different in terms of what they will allow.
kandio...one of the reasons for that is at boot camp and at a-school they have many many classes on finances and it is really drummed into their head about the need to be responsible and that being a good sailor also means being financially responsible - so you will see this more and more.
I just want to support what dianne is saying about mail and also remind folks this is one of the reasons we suggest you don't use your recruits name or picture in your screen name or picture. Recently a mom who chose to have her screen name as "myson'smom" said her son was writing every night "under the covers" and the RDC from the division saw it, confronted him, the division got in trouble, and the letters got suddenly much shorter...lol!!
Tchrmom: They start receiving mail about 2 weeks after they have arrived. Usually you will get a letter asking you where your letters are, but actually, by the time you get that letter, he/she has gotten yours.
I was like you before my son left a year ago. Being older, he didn't want me involved at all in his enlistment, etc. In fact, he didn't tell me about Navy for Moms....I googled Navy support groups and found it. So he too went into bc only knowing that the recruiter told him. Probably better for him too...I did tell him beforehand that they WOULD be yelling alot and you know that..actually a friend who went in a year before him had talked to him about that. This friend was 30 when he went in...so he said he "got it" as far as why they needed to yell and break down. He talked to my son alot about that. Beyond that, he and I knew nothing! My son also told me that he had thought about the military for a long time...I had no clue (he is an actor personality...and needed the discipline of the military...but I didn't think he would do that.)
