Thanks Lori.......knowing Jake I'm sure he'll have friends by tomorrow but after talking to him last night I had a few doubts. He finds out I hope today when his ship comes back in and if they are going to send him out or have him wait. Yesterday was the first time Jake has been on an airplane since he was 2-1/2 years old. I think I was way more worried then he was.........to him it was a piece of cake........

Katie -
I wrote a longer message but it wouldn't save!

I'm glad he made it safely and I hope he finds he enjoys it there. The weather is supposed to be rainy today and tomorrow - but nice at the end of the week and weekend. I hope he gets a chance to explore and look around a bit!

IF he doesn't get to fly out to his ship - please let me know if he's at all interested in joining us for Thanksgiving dinner. We have another Sailor who can't get home to Florida and he's coming up - Jake is SO welcome to come up with him. The other sailor is also from the Norfolk area. Just say the word and we can work it out. I am SO HOPING that someone in Japan will take Jordan under their wing and give him a place to celebrate there. (A little piece of you, ya know?!?)

All the best!

Katie, glad he made it there without any problems. He'll make friends there in no time. Once he gets into his new schedule and becomes familiar with the base.
Let us know when he hears. Is that when he finds out when the ship is due back? I admire these guys so much- all the changes they have undergone since leaving for BC back in April.

Just a quick update.......Jake landed in Norfolk without a hitch...sounded a little sad last night when I talked to him but I'm sure that will pass relatively fast. I can only imagine the lonelyness he feels starting in a new place, not knowing anyone. His ship is still out on deployment so he finds out today what will happen to him (either he waits in Little Creek or they fly him out to his ship)

Marilyn, Whew thanks for that. I was thinking that airport would be bigger. I know Jake has been amazing me with his smarts all his life especially since joining the Navy...and he has always been pretty resourceful........

Katie...I just wanted to let you know that Norfolk is really a pretty small airport and the town isn't very large either. It's close in size to Great Lakes - if not a bit smaller. I have every confidence that he will be fine! And I am only a couple hours a way if you need me to drive down and push someone around for you! I figure if Jordan can figure out Okinawa (he didn't have a sponsor available either - he's going to a land unit, so maybe that changed things some??) where some people don't speak English that he was asking for directions from...Jake will find this to be a breeeeeeeze! And you will be amazed at his super smart brains and abilities. :)

Have a beautiful day, my Navy Mom Friends!

Hello, I just read over all you ladies wrote in the last few days. I wish I had more time to get on here more often. Jake leaves on Sunday at 9:15 from Green BAy, WI, switches in Chicago and lands in Nofolk at I believe 2:30 in the afternoon. These flight arrangements were made for him before he left GL but at the last minute. He ended up paying $30 for his ticket because he was flying out from home. I learned that most sailors get a sponsor that will meet them at their duty station and show them around but seeing Jake's ship is still on deployment he doesn't have a sponsor and will be on his own to get to the base and checked in. I'm pretty nervous about that but of course Jake doesn't seem to be phased by this. This will be Jake's first time flying so of course I'm worried and we are from this little town in Wisconsin and he's flying into a big city. But again he doesn't seem worried.......kids! While Jake was home he worked with his recruiters here to earn back some of his leave. He had to but in at least an hours 5 consecutive days and got 5 days back. Which was great!

Lori, nothing is predictable with the Navy I found out. Jake was given orders for Little Creek almost right after A-School Graduation in August but then they were cancelled. Then he was back on hold. And of course just when he was okay with being in GL he got orders again for Little Creek and we thought he would have to wait awhile for a transfer date.....nope within 2 weeks of his verbal orders he was coming home on leave. Its wonderful that Paul will be able to come home for Christmas. I'm sure you will enjoy that time with him home. But I'm finding the longer Jake is home the harder it is for me to let him leave again.

Well, I better get back to work......keep in touch and as always your sailors and your families are in my thoughts and prayers.....Katie

You and John had a GREAT helper then! Whoever your ombudsman was - they were on the ball. :)

This is one of the great things about this site and the ones like it - we learn things from each other so we can ask better questions and help our Sailors push for the right things.

Lori, john went to a school from home to, he did have to the difference of $40 to do it, that is why he needs to put in for the time asap.he did have to wait until the tickets were bought and then change them. the ombudsman had called to see if he was taking tme and helped him with it
