Jaz & RNnavy - phone calls are earned priveleges, but if they don't come, it doesn't mean that your recruit messed up. It's all for one and one for all in a division - and, each RDC can run the division the way they choose (some are more strict than others). As far as letters go, they can only write on Sundays and then sometimes around the 5th week they can write on other days too - but once again, depends on their RDC and how the division is working together as a team. My son arrived in GL on Wed 4/7 and we got the form letter on Fri 4/16 (9 days later), then his first letter the next day, Sat 4/17. After that, letters came every Thurs (we live on West coast), until about 5th week, then we got one or two a week. I dated all the letters we sent to him and he said it took 7-10 days for him to receive them. Letters are only opened by your recruit, but they can be opened in front of his RDC, so don't send anything you are not suppose too! Wallet or small pics are okay, but they must be tasteful. They LOVE getting photos. Hang in there, those letters and an occasional phone call will come.

Thanks Sobe, that makes a lot of sense...I feel much better now. He did give them our banks info for direct deposit so I'm hoping on the 1st it will be there. I know they don't get to call much, but I was hoping for at least a letter by now. I know they are busy and there's not much time for communication, but it still hurts. We all miss our SRs and just want to hear something from them...hopefully soon!

So I take it none of our SR's got to make father's day calls? I was hoping and kept the cell phone handy. I thought he may have called his Pappy instead since they are closer than he is with his dad or step dad.

Hi ladies, re: checks. You know how sometimes when you start a new job, you may not get a check on the first payday you're working there? Well, the Navy is a business and they are the same way. Paydays are the 1st and 15th, if that falls on a Sunday or Holiday, it's paid one business day prior - at least that's how it is for my son. If they started bc too far into a pay period, they won't get a check until the next payday - not the first one. Hope that makes sense. My son showed up at RTC with a direct deposit form completed from his bank. Some sailors join the Navy Fed credit union when they arrive, so paycheck might be going there instead. With a 7/30 PIR date, I assume most of your recruits arrived the 1st or 2nd week of June - too late for June 15th payday, but should be set for July 1st, in 4 days.

As far as phone calls go. I probably had the least amount of calls of anyone I have talked to. The "I'm here" call, another call about 3 1/2 weeks later (that I missed - was on a flight) and not again until he passed BS-21 (the "I'm a Sailor" call). He was there just a little over 8 weeks. They say "no news is good news", but I learned to hate that phrase rather quickly - but it is true, and once PIR is over, you can talk/text as much as you like with them in A-School - it's a totally different world in bc.

Thanks Deena. My husband is in the White Sox division and I thought that was the case but when I talked to his recruiter to inquire about his check, he said he'd never heard of the sox paying for uniforms. I knew I wasn't crazy, lol. Well now I'm even more worried about his check. I need to call someone tomorrow. Anyway, hopefully we'll hear from them soon! Three weeks is a long time especially with absolutely no contact!

Hi RNnavywife. My son is in the same division. He was on the white sox division. Im not sure if your husband was but just a FYI, the white sox gave each recruit $900 allowance for uniforms. We thought that was fabulous. As for receiving a check, my son was opening up a new acct with the Navy, so I have no idea when he will get a check. Good luck. I am so anxious to hear from him. I haven't received any letters or phone calls as yet. I was hoping he would get to call for fathers day.

Can anyone tell me if they received a check from their recruit yet? I was told he would get it direct deposited on the 15th. I haven't gotten anything yet and am worried. I know they take a large chunk out for uniforms, but every last cent of it? Seems unlikely. He's the main financial supporter of our family so I'm getting a little nervous about when his first check will come. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!!!

Hi everyone! My name is Samantha! I am new to this group (and site!) My husband is in ship 10 div 254 and I still haven't heard from him :( I live about 50 miles south of Great Lakes but have reservations for the Ramada as well, so I don't have to drive back and forth all weekend. I am a little lost on this whole Navy thing still, but I'm learning. How do I know if my husband is "Grad and Go"?

My son wrote early on that he "thinks" he might be a G&G, then about 3 weeks prior to PIR, he wrote he IS a G&G. We couldn't wait to make our flights because costs go up the closer you are to your departure date - so we planned to be there the whole weekend even if we couldn't be with him. He flew out on Saturday, but we spent 4+ hrs with him at the airport and had a really good time there with him! Then we enjoyed Chicago the rest of the weekend. If your driving, it's easy enough to change your plans that that week, but those of us who had to fly needed to make plans earlier. I like the way ours turned out. Being a G&G mom was awesome, because I handed him his phone at the airport and we have been in constant contact for the last two weeks - something I was craving after 8 weeks with no contact. There is a silver lining in everything!

Thanks cath! That was my next question... if we could cancel if they were grad & go. I am planning on going to the meet & greet. I'm coming from Pittsburgh, Pa and leaving early Thursday morning so I will probably get there Thursday around 4 or 5. My best friend graduation in March, but I wasn't able to make it to Great Lakes until midnight Thursday night so I missed the meet & greet. I'm excited to meet everyone. Hopefully we'll be able to get to know each other in the next few weeks, and it'll be nice to meet in person.

I'm thinking if he writes tonight, I might have a letter on Wednesday. That was usually the day of the week I'd get them from my friend when he was in basic. It's sort of exciting in an old fashioned way to wait for the mail =)
