abuon- As soon as he gets to San Diego and checks in he should ask someone about filling out a marriage chit. Sometimes they won't need to fill out a chit other times they will. If he does then it can take up to about 2 or more weeks to get approved. He might also be required to take a marriage class and so on so the soonest he can figure out what he needs to do the best. After you get married and he turns in everything he needs to then he will draw BAH which he can use for you to live. If San Diego's BAH for E-4 and below is 1941 then he'll get half in each pay check which he can then give to you or whatever you choose to do with it.

Another thing about getting married after orders are issued is that he'll be an unaccompanied single sailor to the navy, and so he's much more likely to get a sea duty or an overseas duty station.

Hi Sara,

Since I was planning on moving there unmarried I wasn't expecting to be able to live with him, so that part wouldn't really be a concern of ours anyway. I know a chit is  "permission slip" basically-if we do decide to get married while he is in A school when would you recommend that he turn that it to get it approved? And also, if we do get married while he is in A school, will I get any sort of living allowance for being his wife but being unable to live with him?

Abuon- you're quite welcome :) I'm the same way, I like to plan plan plan and know what's going on and when it's happening and everything. I'm very plan oriented. totally not the navy way! hahaha. If you are moving out to San Diego, I'd be pretty worried about finances, I don't know what your financial situation is of course but I'd definitely wait until he is drawing BAH. For San Diego it's 1941 dollars/month until he makes E-5 http://images.military.com//ContentFiles/2011-bah-rates-with-depend...  which tells me that San Diego is fairly expensive only because DC's BAH is 1779 and we can't afford to live off base anywhere around there because real estate is so crazy expensive. Anyway, for me personally I would recommend getting married as soon as his chit gets approved and then when the first BAH comes in I'd go ahead and move. I'm not familiar with his rate or San Diego but most schools will not approve a brown bagger chit (living off base) while the sailors are in school. so it might end up that you move there and he still have to live in the barracks.. at least you'd get to see him pretty often though.

Thank you Sara-I know all about his schooling, he is STG-AEF so I his A school & C school will be in San Diego. Right now I have mostly been focusing on boot camp because when I signed up for the site we still had about 7 or 8 months to go! So now that it's getting closer I'm trying to figure out everything else, as everything with the Navy it's different for everyone so it's been hard trying to coordinate my moving out to San Diego with him.... it's a lot of wait and see, which I am not good at so I'm trying to appease myself with getting as much information as possible! We were originally planning on waiting until he was in C school to get married just because since we have to move to SD separately, I wanted some time to get settled there before we got married, but honestly it's something we were going to do once we got there so if we have to get married a few months early it's really not a big deal! Thank you for being in a good mood & being so helpful, I am sorry you and your husband are having such a difficult time.
