To be added to the list send me (Susan mom to Niko) a friend request. Then you can send me a private message with your name, location and phone number. Then you are added to the list!

My son, who lives in Portsmouth across from Norfolk, is on a ship & out of touch, so I called his Los Angeles-raised roommate to ask him to move my son's car from their condo parking lot to the parking structure next door at the Navy hospital. He said he'd 'keep an eye on what others were doing' during the night....I had to gently explain that once the weather hits, you don't want to be out moving cars! :) They've had flooding from storms before, so this could certainly be worse. Hope he got with it and moved the car!

NORFOLK

Though storm forecasts late Wednesday didn’t show Hurricane Earl making a direct strike at Virginia, high winds, dangerous surf and potential tidal flooding were forecast, and storm preparations were being made.

The governors of North Carolina and Virginia declared states of emergency Wednesday. Late in the day, the president signed a disaster declaration for North Carolina, authorizing federal disaster-relief efforts.

This morning, Norfolk officials announced that residents who need to move their vehicles from low-lying areas can park them free in city garages, beginning at 6 p.m. Residents can use the West Plume Street, Boush Street, York Street, Freemason Street and MacArthur South and North garages through Friday.

Residents of the Larchmont, Highland Park and Lambert's Point neighborhoods in Norfolk will be allowed to park on the upper levels of Old Dominion University parking garages C and D, on 43rd and 45th streets between hampton Boulevard and Monarch Way, from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday. Any cars without an ODU decal remaining in the garages after that may be towed.

Portsmouth residents in low-lying areas may park their vehicles in city parking garages after 6 p.m. Thursday: County Street Garage, Harbor Court Garage, Middle Street Garage and Water Street Garage. Vehicles may not be parked in spaces marked as 24-hour reserve, Harbor Tower, Police Department or Sheriff's Department and must be removed by 7 a.m. on Monday.

The Navy said early this afternoon that it’s unlikely sailors will have to move the roughly three dozen ships sitting pierside at Norfolk Naval Station. Crews nonetheless remain on standby in case forecasts for Hampton Roads worsen.

Aside from the early return of the destroyer Cole on Wednesday, no deployed ships have had to change course because of Earl, officials said. The Navy instructed non-essential personnel at all local installations to stay home on Friday. Most civilian employees at Joint Base Langely-Eustis are on orders to arrive after noon.

Two hundred Virginia National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated for possible operations. They were scheduled to begin staging with vehicles and equipment in Norfolk and Hampton this morning in case they are needed for high-water transport and debris removal.

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed the Midtown Tunnel on Wednesday night for about an hour to test the tide gate. Shortly before midnight, VDOT sent a notice that the tide gate test was successful.

The Hampton VA Medical Center evacuated some patients as a precaution against flooding.

Jennifer Askey, a spokeswoman for the 468-bed center, said 37 patients with spinal cord injuries were bused to the VA center in Richmond and 14 mental health patients were sent to Durham, N.C., and Salisbury, N.C. Those evacuated were the center’s least ambulatory patients, she said. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facility is on the waterfront, about 13 feet above sea level at its highest point.

Most Hampton Roads cities anticipated keeping their normal schedules in place. Virginia Beach postponed its Friday trash pickup to Saturday. Portsmouth asked its residents to hold off putting garbage curbside until after 6 a.m. Friday.

Also post your request under the "Post your Rescue Requests here!". That should have more responses also.

Tuckers'smom....go to norfolk moms or Virginia group and see if there is some one who can help...Also join your son's Sub group (if there is one) and or find out who the Ombudsman is and then connect with them to see if they can help you and your sailor

There is probably a group of moms for the Norfolk VA area...maybe check with them for thoughts on this?

Tucker'smom, I wish I was closer to help. I will keep your son and his friend in my prayers as well as all the other sailors.
