We're talking about A school, sorry.

Things are about to get crazy in Pensacola, so I wouldn't count on ANY date at this point.

First, there is the oil slick that is heading toward those perfect white beaches of theirs. Often they pull students out of school to work this kind of disaster until it's over. Our guys are likely to be up to their knees in black muck for the next few weeks.

Then there's the Tennessee problem. Apparently the Navy personnel center in Tennessee (where all orders are processed) is either completely surrounded by flood waters (inaccessible) or is flooded. Rumor is it may be up to four months before anyone gets orders.

Worst case scenario: they could be in Pensacola until September or October.

They graduated Feb 19th.

Arwen, Shawn was told it was 10 days in holding before they leave but they must put papers in or talk to someone before they start counting. It might be a little different but not much. You can tell Chris the final checkout day is boring. It just so happens that I am sitting in the car, watching it pour, and waiting for Shawn to get down so we can spend the next 2 wks packing to move.

Chris will probably have to fly out the next day. All the flights he needs to arrive at our airport require an early morning flight out of Pensacola. That's good news though. Hanging around after school is ended is so boring. When I graduated A school I couldn't get a flight out until the next day, I was so eager to get out of there I left after the ceremony and slept at the airport. I wanted no part of staying there for a minute longer than I had to. I was eager to hit the next step!

Chris has an actual graduation date now: June 4. Yay! Then it's just a matter of waiting for orders and travel arrangements.

Diego Garcia is in the middle of the Indian Ocean. There isn't anything near it, and families are not allowed on the island. You can't visit, no civilians allowed. For that reason, a "tour" of Diego Garcia is only 1 year and sailors who complete that year get their choice of orders for their next duty station.

Deanne, I understand the selfish thing. I want my son to get one of the Seattle bases, because it would be the easiest for me to get to. Plus it's one area of the country I want to explore more.

I'd also love to see him get Diego Garcia. It's an incredibly beautiful, mostly unspoiled island for him to explore. I would never get to visit him, but it would be an incredible opportunity for him. It's hell on married sailors, or those in a relationship, but for a single sailor who is happy as long as he has his video games and e-books and loves outdoor adventure, it's perfect.

Deanne, Chris started classes about 5 weeks ago, and thinks he has 3 weeks remaining. He's not entirely certain, though, because his is the first class on a brand-new schedule. Expect your son to tell you he is "graduating" at the end of his fourth week. It's a "technical" graduation, and doesn't mean much except that he can now wear his "sparks" and has the title ITS_. They did have a small graduation ceremony, they had to wear their whites (with their new insignia).

However, they turn them right around and send them back to school to take radio classes for four weeks. Chris is pretty sure after that they get a bigger graduation and are send off to their first duty station.

The ITs who are a week ahead of Chris got their verbal orders (subject to change) at the end of last week, but they are on a different program, so the timing may not apply to newer classes.

Chris called, he said that he "technically graduates" next Friday, but that they have more schooling (continuation of A school, not C school) before they get their orders and can go on leave. He was told to send his blues and whites in to get his "sparks" (the IT insignia) sewn on already! Wow, fast!
