OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Graduation Info for Lackland AFB - Navy MA graduation; Places to stay, see or avoid!

Anyone who has been or has knowledge of San Antonio/Lackland AFB, please share your info!

I know one thing is for sure, the "rules" are basically the same to get on ANY base.  You will need to have your Sailor put the names of anyone planning to attend graduation, on a list and give it to their team leader or XO.  When you get to Lackland, you'll go to the Pass & I.D. office to get your permit to be on base (Which you will need along with proof of auto insurance, vehicle registration and of course your state issued i.d.).

 

One thing to remember - there are AF graduations (almost) every Friday, which means traffic is usually fairly heavy, so plan accordingly for travel time (Especially if you're staying off base).

 

If you plan to stay at one of the hotels on base, your Sailor will need to make the reservations and also will need to be present when you check in - UNLESS you have your own military i.d. - then you can take care of all the arrangements yourself!

 

If you haven't already heard, your Sailor can choose who he/she would like to pin their newly acquired badge on them, during the ceremony!  The ceremony is very simple.  NOTHING like PIR graduation, but no-less important - so make sure to take pictures - or make sure they get copies from someone if you can't attend.

 

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!  Pilot or Brenda Sue can help way more than I can (Since they both live in TX), but I'll help where ever I can!

Hi I am new and just starting PH2 of A school soon with my son. He graduates this Friday and I was wondering is there a schedule ect. to get more info on A School graduation? I would like to start thinking about planning it now :)

mynavyguy - I'm guessing you mean he'll be graduating from Boot Camp on Friday, correct?  I think you've already found the break down by weeks, so that will give you a good idea of what to expect and when.  If you need more info - ask here or out on the main forum.

Is there a limit to the number that can go to this graduation , too? I am the only one going to PIR because of distance and cost but since we live within driving distance of SA the whole family wants to go. There would be 5 of us.

There aren't usually too many people who show up (Due to finances, time off work, distance, etc), for A-School graduations.  As far as I know, there is not a limit, but just keep it within reason.  I do know there were a couple of families who had at least five in attendance, though.  Make sure to have your Sailor put all names on the list of those who plan to attend!

 

 

We just got back from Graduation. Tip for you going try to go the night before meet up with your sailor then he can take you on base with his ID and your Drivers License. This way you can see EXACTLY where you need to go. After you drop him or her off go to the  Visitors Center and get your pass for the next day. They will need your drivers license, they never ask for my insurance card or registration. They will give you a pass for a few days so you can use it if you are planning to visit for a while. Getting to the CORRECT gate, believe me there are SEVERAL gates that you can go in, but ONLY ONE gate to get to the MA area. You take 410 south on the interstate . You want to be very careful because 410 south will come up with little warning. There will be a split 410 South to the left and 410 North to the right stay in your Left lane for 410 South. Then  you will follow 410 South for a short time and it will curve off to the RIGHT take that , then follow it to the dead end red light (staying in your left lane) take a left go back over the interstate go straight into the base. To get to the MA area once on base go through the gate to the first Red Lite take a LEFT go straight  till you come to the dead end (there will be a Chapel in front of you ) take a LEFT go downn to the third turn in (i believe 3rd) take a right their dorms are on the left . You can get there around  745 the day of graduation and watch them March to the building for Graduation. You can TAKE PICTURES OUTSIDE TOO !! You can go in the building but not the Auditorium they will practice and will come out and let you know (around 845) that you can come in. The buliding is Carter Hall. The Ceremony is very nice and personal. Nothing like BC. The Auditorium is fairly large the family sits on one side and the Graduates sit on the other. There were only around 30 people there for N graduation. You can take as many pics as you want and they even let you go up on the stage when they are swearing in and take pics of the group. The pinning of the badge is very informal , they go across the stage and get their certificate and badge then sit back down and later will come over to you and who ever they chose can pin their badge on , then they go back to the group and Swear in.  We stayed at the Howard Johnson Inn and Suites. It is OK very clean but old mattresses and the non smoking rooms smelled a little bad. The price was 52 a nite, and I was trying to cut corners. It had a full kitchen , with stove and Refrigerator. I wanted to cook my son his favorite meal this is why I chose this place. It was only like 4 miles away but on a one way street so made it a little tricky getting back but we got it down. It was very easy to go to the base when the gate was open that was off high way 90. If not you had to get on 410 to go to the other gate. Take you a GPS to find things the roads are a little tricky and like I said they are not marked great!! We will go back in May for his Graduation from the Military Working Dog Program, so I will know where to go this time LOL> If you have any other questions let me know.

Hey Redfly - Sorry it's taken me so long to get back with you.  I was in Kings Bay this weekend.  

 

I believe I may have posted the following link before, but I'm going to do it again just in case I haven't:

It's a list of hotels near Lackland AFB.  I've only been the one time and we stayed at Howard Johnsons - not too expensive, and remember, you get what you pay for, but it wasn't horrible ($65 per night).  There are one or two Gateway Lodge/Hotel/Inn (Not too sure of what the name is), which is on base and very near to the barracks, but your Sailor will have to make the reservations for you as well as be there when you check in to show his/her military i.d.  

 

If you are on a tight budget, the hotel on base is usually fairly inexpensive ($35-$50 per night), but unless your reservation is confirmed with a credit card (They don't usually charge the card until you check in), you run the risk of losing your reservation - and I've been told it has happened a few times.  The biggest problem with that would be your Sailor having the time to go and make the reservations - and then being able to be there to assist you with your check-in.

 

Like I said, we stayed at the Howard Johnson, which was less than a mile from base - and it wasn't too bad.  I think the worse thing we had were what sounded like MILLIONS of birds in the courtyard the next morning!  lol  They were really LOUD, but we were already up and moving because it was graduation day!  It was "aged" but clean.

I don't know how much help that was, but hopefully it helps a little.  I know there's someone on here who lives in San Antonio, but my mind is not pulling up the name of who ...
