ProudNavyMom, you just have to do what is right for you.  I wasn't able to make it for my Sailor's pinning and many others are also in that boat as well.  I don't regret it because I have been able to help him financially at times that I wouldn't have been able to if I had used the money for a trip down for the pinning.  Leave generally starts the afternoon of the pinning, but sometimes the next day.  Your Sailor will know.

Other MA moms, I am so torn! We'd love to go to the Pinning ceremony/Graduation, but we are almost 1700 miles away and have a limited budget. My husband only has 1 week of vacation left since we went to BC Graduation in Great Lakes. He would have to use this time to go to the graduation, but then go back to work as soon as we bring our son home for leave! What to do? Use the vacation time to travel to go see the graduation or use the time after he comes home to actually spend time with him?? I know it's a very important accomplishment, does anyone know how soon after the ceremony they start their leave? Maybe it all depends on their orders...

My son was at A school back in april /may.............  he had his  laptop and  playstation  cell phone ect ....  we have verizon so he just  got the  internet  thing thru verizon  that way when he  traveling etc he always has it ... now that he is in washington  he  put  that (verizon internet) on military hold  and  put internet in his barracks ... at aschool he and some of the guys were going to go in and split  the internet but they decided it wasnt worth it   so just a thought on  that ... plus when they get free time they LOVE to get off base and go downtown ... well all our guys did LOL i know  they  have wifi in the common area  so if they want to skype  tell them  to sit out  by the pool tables :)  also  they do have lodging on base and  quite a few hotels(kinda shady) around base the one on base is  very nice ... the only thing is you cannot  reserve it your sailor has to  and it has to be done a week before you arrive no sooner  andd he would have to meet you there to register  but it is very close to their barracks and very nice i beleive it was either 29$ or 39$ a day . they just arent allowed to reserve it  until a week  ahead . good luck  to you all its fun to  listen to you all  with your sailors  mine is in washington now  MA PRP  and loves it up there  and is looking forward to their 96 hrs this weekend !!!

they are done with class by 4pm and most of the weekend is off, except when they have watch.  It would be nice to be able to skype, but we are  happy for texting and phone calls.  My sailor is thinking when it gets to be close to a month left he will see if he wants to sign up, depending on how much he misses it.  Because I think the monthly rate was the best deal

Yeah my son has the same issue, he said the internet is pricey for the short time they are there so right now we communicate by cell but he has to go outside of his room otherwise we loose reception.  If he wants to go on line he goes to the library or the mall on base where there is internet connections.

My son just arrived this week at San Antonio. We gave him his computer and cell phone at the airport, but so far haven't had much luck with the communication. Does anyone know the best way to get good reception for skype or calling, without signing a 2 year contract with a major communication company for 2 years. No one is giving him any info on this and the guys are willing to split the cost. He will only b there for two months like most others.

Me!!!! My son is graduating Oct 7th. I'm in Minnesota so alittle traveling, but we plan on being there.  did your daughter talk about the OC day of fun?  We don't have the lodging done yet either and are open to suggestions

Hi Mom's, my daughter entered A School and will graduate Oct 7th, if all goes well. Which so far, she has done great! Are their any other mom's out there that have a sailor graduating then?

Also, needing some better info on lodging, is there a hotel on base like in Great Lakes?
