Marti - my son grads on Friday also.  My other son grad 2 weeks ago.  I was unable to go to Texas for either of them.  The upside was that my son who grads this week was able to pin his twin's badge on for him and when he grads tomorrow, their buddy from home (who also went to bc and MA school with them) will pin him.  They took pics with their phones to send home.  That part was nice to still be able to see it, even if not in person. They end up leaving the base that afternoon or early the next morning. PS...their badges are very shiny and look so handsome on their uniforms. : )

My son is not coming home before his first duty station.  He only has 5 days, and he has to be at his sation on the 22nd. So it would not pay to come home and then go back in 2 days.  He wants to leave this Saturday to get to Hawaii and get settled before he starts on Tuesday. It is hard not to be there with him, but the way I look at it I will not have to say goodbye those almost kill me I think.

Marti...My son graduated last March and I was not able to attend.  We had just gone from NC to Chicago for his BC graduation 8 weeks earlier so just could not go.  Unless things have changed though your son should get to come home for 2 weeks before reporting to his first duty station.  My son told me not to be worried about coming to SA because it he would be leaving that afternoon to stay at a hotel and then catching a flight first thing the next morning to fly home.  He said while MA graduation was important it was not as important as BC graduation.  He did have a buddy with parents that lived near by and attended that took pics and sent to us.  Please don't feel bad about not attending!  Your son will understand!  Congratulations on your son's graduation!  Where is your son going to be stationed after graduation?

Anita - Your Sailor will need to put the names of all who will be attending on a list (They give it to their XO or team leader - I'll have to double check on exactly who) - and then you will need your i.d, proof of insurance, like for PIR.

They will issue your pass for however long you plan to stay and you will show that along with your i.d (for everyone in the vehicle), each time you go on base.  Don't forget, they have AF graduations on Fridays, as well - can get just a *little* congested!

And  - I can't remember who was asking about transportation for their Sailor this weekend, but my son said to use "Mac T" transportation - he said it was the most reasonable - and at least somewhat safe drivers!

My Sailor is in his second duty station and is currently located 6841 miles from me.  His first duty station was also quite a ways away.  He came home on leave for the first time since Dec. 2008 for a month in August.  He also came home in November for 2 weeks when his dad was hospitalized.  He says he will come back in Nov. (my birthday and also my brother comes in from Alaska at that time, so we have a big celebration).  Most of the time he loves what he is doing and is currently an MA3.  Although we are permitted to say locations, I choose not to--just my preference.

Thanks for all of the info. Will just be me, his dad and sister going to Graduation. I assume he will get his Dad to Pin his badge on him (even though I would LOVE to do it) lol. You Moms know what I mean?>> It will be special for his Dad to get to do that though. Sounds a little like BC check in , we decided not to drive to BC because of the possible long wait but here it sounds very small. I am looking forward to seeing him and cooking him some food. Brenda Sue we have decided to stay at Howard Johnsons Inn and Suites on Hwy. 90 west. Is that an ok place to stay? I liked it because it had a full kitchen and was very reasonable (52) a nite.

Lemonelepohant where is your sailor now ? How has MA gone for him since he has been in ? My son will go to Pax River Maryland after his MWD trainning in San Anotonio. Just curious to see what has happened to these that have been in a while.

Hunter's Mom, San Antonio has the only A School for MA's at this time.  In the past there were also A Schools in Hampton Roads, VA and Kings Bay, GA and then they closed them and gradually transferred all of the MA training to San Antonio.  My Sailor was originally set to have A School in Virginia, but in his last week in BC, he got word he was going to San Antonio instead.  That was October 2008.  The Virginia A School for MA's closed about that time.  MA's still may go to Virginia or Kings Bay for additional trainings at times after A School.  I hope that helps to clarify things.

My son grad's on Friday wish I could be there for it.  I hope he gets someone to take pictures for me.  I don't feel right not being there and leaving him alone. I am sure there are others who can't have family there too.
