Good Morning Ladies, well spoke with my Son last night and he did mention that he has gotten in touch with his sponsor so I guess with that I will leave it in his hands to do what he needs. Thank You all for your support and information.

Thank You Jenn, I am very excited for him to be there, My Family is always trying to find a reason to go there so now we have on! YAY! yea I just figure I will leave it to him to figure it out, I don't want to step on his toes and him get upset, not that he will get upset because I am MOM and he knows I mean well, But the all the advice is really nice and I greatly appreciate it. My oldest Daughter and family went a few months back to San Diego and took a tour of the base, My grandkids were very excited and hoping that their Uncle would be able to be there. So Now that they Know it is very exciting for all of us, to be so close to him. I know all of this will be new to him but I am sure he will be fine, It is a beginning of a New Journey for myself also, so I am so Glad that I have found this site with so many Ladies with the knowledge that hopefully I will come to have one day. So Thank you all for welcoming me and reassuring me that he will be fine. It  really does make me feel at ease.

Hi PhoenixMom. My son isn't stationed in San Diego but I live here. Congratulations on your son's orders to our beautiful city! When my son went in back in 2011 I was constantly worried about if he was going to get everything done and what I could do to help him get it done. What I've learned over the last 6 years is that the Navy works so differently than we think it should or than we would like it to. I second all the other mom's comments - The Navy will make sure they get what they need. They may need to make more phone calls and take the lead in certain circumstances but they aren't left hanging. He'll be great and it's awesome that he wants to do it for himself. But I know from experience that it's still a easy to worry. It will get better - promise. :) As for the passport - don't sweat it. My son didn't have one either and his command made sure he got one before they deployed. It'll all work out.

Oleander thank You for replying, I am feeling that worrying about every detail, I just don't want to upset my son by trying to help out, He has told me he is grown and needs to do things for himself because if I keeping trying to help he wont know how to do things for himself. So with that I said OK Got it, but still cant help but to help him. So with all of your Ladies Knowledge I will let it be, and just let him take it and pray he gets the info he needs. The passport thing I tried and gave up, he will figure that one on his own, and then he will see what I was trying to tell him. I guess the "I told you so" right now he keeps insisting he don't need it, so instead of turning it into something it shouldn't I just said ok let it be. I thank You once again, and I will take all of your advice.

Thank You Ladies for your reply, I believe he will be on the CVN 71 USS Roosevelt, He is a EM, 19yrs next week. The Baby of the Family and Boy am I nervous and worried. He has grown so much being in the Military and has a mind of his own, so Strong Headed. I guess I should just Back off a bit and hopefully he will get what I am trying to say about passport and all. It just seems liking talking with him about instruction on going to New base he doesn't know, so I hope he figures it out beforehand. Ladies I was told that I should sign up with a Ombudsman, can you explain to me about that, I was told signing up would keep me in the loop about info. so not sure how to go about that. and if you can give me some knowledge about all this. I thank You, for helping me to understand all of this.

@Phoenixmom, my son is also in SD.  He initially arrived in August and had an underway in October.  He was assigned a sponsor who reached out via email but after that she never responded to any questions emailed to her.  There was a form she sent him via email and he filled it out and the lets his command know when to expect him.  I am in Mobile, AL and we drove to New Orleans to fly him out.  My husband, who is prior military (thank goodness) let my son know that there would be a USO there and he could go there and wait for his ride.  Now, I don't know if someone came to get him or if he called or what.  I never did ask him.  I knew he had arrived because I checked his bank account and saw he had eaten dinner in SD.  haha.  And tell your son anytime he flies and has a layover, go to the USO at the airport.  My son is currently deployed and boy do I miss talking to him.  Good luck!  Don't worry, he will be fine.  They won't leave him hanging!

Thank You for replying Nuke ELT Mom Now I have been discussing the passport thing with him and he keeps trying to say he doesn't need one, will the base inform him that he will, and I am not sure if he even knows to get with a sponsor, he hasn't received any instruction as of yet will he be informed about a sponsor? I'm just so worried for him, he will be a EM so not sure where he will be.

Comment by Phoenixmom on January 25, 2018 at 11:28am

Noni Thank You so much, I am totally Lost with all this, when I spoke to him he has not even had any instruction as to what to do and I'm confused on that, will this be mentioned to him, I was assuming that at least a week prior to him leaving this will or would happen. Would you know if this does or not? So once he gets to airport he will need to change into uniform correct, he does have an app for lyft so that shouldn't be a problem, he is in the process of getting his belongings sent home but it seems the days are going by quick and I really don't know where he is at with all this. Just so worried. I am like 4-6 hours away from him but no word on what he is wanting or planning. Now the sponsor thing would he have gotten that when he received his orders? I guess tonight I should get on the phone with him. I was trying to explain to him to get a passport and he kept saying he didn't need one, but I have been told he does, so I didn't want to argue with him and just left it as is. I am in the process of trying to get one for my self, so confused.

Phoiexmom,
Your son will need to report in uniform. He will not fly in uniform for the Navy doesn't allow that. The first thing he should do is get his sponsor information. That will give him all his answers. If I can answer anything else just ask
Welcome to the group!

Phoenixmom, to answer some of your questions. Congratulations on SD. My daughter who is an Officer Is stationed there. I live 5 miles away from where your son is in A School. 3000 miles is a Distance, for us as well. Your son should have gotten a sponsor to whatever ship he is on. He needs to contact his sponsor for details of his job. FYI they aren't always prompt in answering. My daughter drover her car to SD. there is no one to pick you up from SAN airport. he will have to take an Uber or Lyft to the base. No USO, my daughter stayed at the naval lodge until she received housing. Most enlisted stay in the barracks which is right by 32 Ave. The ship yard.
