OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

You can also visit www.gulfcoast.org to find events, attractions, restaurants, and more for the area. Phillip's mom-your son should be able to leave base on the weekends. The rules when they are in ECS and battalion life are much more different than A school. They expect them to be adults, show up on time, and be able to function properly. As long as they do that and stay out of trouble, they're pretty much free to do what they want. The only exception would be on days when he has duty. He needs to be available in case they call him in and will possibly have watch. During ECS, they are really busy and their schedules are unpredictable. So I would definitely wait until he's finished with that. Depending on when his FEX is and his battalion, he should get a 96 when he gets home from that. He will also have most weekends off once in the battalion because the duty rotation isn't as frequent as in A school. With him being new, though, they may try to throw him in last minute classes. I definitely think it's possible for you to get good quality time with him before he leaves, though.

Philip's Mom-I have the same feeling-our first deployment-not sure when it is yet.

Thanks Dona for the info!  I've never been down there before and wasn't sure how easy the access was to get from Biloxi to Gulfport.  We are not even sure we can make plans right now.  He will be going to ECS school then FX and his battlion is supposed to be deployed in Oct.  We don't know if he will be too busy with trainings and if he will be able to leave base on weekends.  Also trying to prepare myself for the deployment.  UGH...

Most of the nice hotels/casinos are in Biloxi. The Beau Rivage is the plushest-we were just there 2 wks. ago. The Hard Rock and The Grand are also there. The IP was nice a year ago, but was undergoing remodeling-should be nice now. The Palace is smoke-free now. I have heard the Oasis in Gulfport is nice, also. We have been there, but did not stay in the hotel. There is also a Hampton Inn in Biloxi. Several chains are out at the interstate I-10-the others I mentioned are on the coast. We usually go down 2-3 times a year. Our son was just stationed there, so we will be back probably more than that now. In fact, we will be down there the last weekend in this month. Looks like several of us have Seabees newly-stationed there now.

My son arrived at Gulfport July 14th for “A” school.  We hope to visit him in about 5 or 6 weeks and would like any good advice on hotels and things to do.

Hello SeaBee moms. My son was just home on leave for a short visit and I am so glad to have seen him. I hope you and all of your families are doing well and are safe.

I haven't been on for awhile. Just got word that my son's home-base will be Gulfport.  He'll be heading there in August, after A-School.  Anyone have any recommendations of nice hotels/casinos in the area?
