OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Kym,

My husband said they need to be cotton. If you shop online at a NEX or BX, you should be able to find them. If need be, we could always pick some up and send them out for you since we have one here on base. Just let me know!

Public parking is free for the beaches. There are tons of areas all along the coast to park! As far as I know, there are no restrooms on the beach unless you are near the yacht clubs or piers.

Anybody living in GP know of any Methodist churches in the area?  Also, we're planning a visit down. If we want to go to the beach. say Long Beach, is there public parking and restrooms to use. Do you have to pay to use the beach?

Hi Cindy. There is a Holiday Inn Express located in Long Beach. It's across the street from the beach and is really nice. It's also pretty close to the downtown area. Island View is in Gulfport and is a little closer to base, but it's nice as well. I have been to Ship Island....I would suggest driving over to Florida and going to the beach there instead. It wasn't a horrible experience, but I don't think it was worth $25. The waves weren't as amazing as they say, and neither was the beach. The food and drinks were pretty pricey. You are allowed to take your own stuff out there, but you have to lug it from the boat to the other side of the island and back. Their rule is what you bring out there, you must bring back with you. We could have just gone on a bad day :-/ Places to eat.....I have quite a few. There is Darwell's (similar to the shed, but better), Harbor View Cafe, Steve's Marina, and Juan Tequilas. These are all in Long Beach and are great, decently priced places to eat. For a little fancier, you could try Salute, Lookout Steakhouse, or Half Shell Oyster House in Gulfport. I've tried Salute and Lookout and they were delicious. They are nice restaurants, but you don't have to be extremely fancy to eat there. In Pass Christian you can try Shaggy's; it's a cute place but has a limited menu. There are a lot more places you can look, but these are the ones that come to my mind first. Here's a website you can look at to see what's on the coast and what activities are going on: http://www.gulfcoast.org/ Hope this helps :D

Hello ladies,

Looking for some advice from all of you. Planning a trip to GP for Easter.  We're deciding on where to stay. Have been there once and stayed at the Res. Inn, which was nice. Is there any place in Long Beach or wondering if anyone has stayed at one of the casinos. My son suggested Island View. He also heard that Ship Island is nice. Anyone been there? Also places to eat. He took us to Mugshot and The Shed before which was fine but maybe somewhere nice but not fancy. Any info would be helpful. Can't wait to hear from you.
