OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Heard from my girl last night...found out she is #2 in her class and is neck-n-neck with her roommate for the #1 spot! It was so not like her in high school, or the first year and a half of college. What a great surprise!... Who knew?! Lol!

Ladies...if I may, please pray for my friend in the Marines...he's closer than my own brother, and an important part of our family. Although I heard news that all of our military over in Japan are safe and accounted for, I have not yet heard from him. I'm sure he's fine, but you all know about this whole "not knowing" thing! I'll rest easier once I've heard straight from him that he's okay! God bless all those suffering right now, and God bless our men and women serving in our armed forces!

anyone hear about the sailors  that got killed  at Camp Lejeune in CA? One of  them was from upstate NY they were construction Builders  which I guess makes them like Seabees?

I haven't been on here in a very long time and thought I met check in. My Seabee is getting ready for deployment. We're hoping to be there when he leaves. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. He was telling me about the weather yesterday but didn't say anything about the base being in lockdown. I just wish our snow would melt a little faster.

My husband just drove to base for work. He wasn't told of any lockdowns or late report times, and they let him on no problem. So not sure what the severity of lockdown is, maybe just not allowed to leave base? The tornado touched down for a short second over by the airport which is about 5 miles from base (approx). The tornado warning was lifted, but we are under tornado watch until noon. Thunderstorm warning was also lifted. We do still have a flash flood watch. We have thunder and lightening going on but not as severe as earlier. So things can change, but for the most part it's looking pretty good.

Denise, thank you for the info, saw the weather on the news, only mentioned gulfport/biloxi airport. Not sure how close the airport is in reference to the base.. we drove from Fla to the base last month.

Denise, thanks for the update.  (snowing in Wisconsin, weird to think about tornadoes)

I joined another group the other day... Japan  Moms as my son is somewhere over there, and I found out I know a lot of the people in the group already. Really great.

I will still check in here from Time to time as once a Seabee mom, always a Seabee mom. Hope  everyone is doing fine.
