OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

Cindyrb-I move to Gulfport next week. My husband will follow a few weeks later.

Tobianne-I will definitely let Kayla know when I get there. I will bring her to the house to hang out so she can get off base for awhile. We will be living right on the beach so she can walk there from my house :-)

And yes, my kitchen is still open! It will not shut down until the night before I leave. In fact, tomorrow is one of my hubby's friend's birthday. I'm making him a two layer homemade yellow cake and homemade frosting. We are going to have him and a few others over and BBQ hamburgers and such. It should be fun.

Manda, when do you leave for GP?  You are packing and still making goodies for the guys... God Love ya girl.

Just to tell ya Kayla said it is so pretty but so cold and she really wants to walk in the ocean!! When ya get there let me or Kayla know. She could come and help get stuff moved around with ya.

Manda,

Are you in Gulfport? Is that where your husband is stationed?

Jmarie46: message me your sons last name. My husband only knows people by their last names.....it drives me nuts, but that's how they all communicate. Your son may already know who my husband is--he's squad leader for UT's. He also leads the PT's with two other guys. Once my husband knows who he is, I will send baked goodies his way and let him know they are made with love sent by his mom :-)

Jaz04- Not her ATM/debit card. This is the card they swipe at the galley. They also use this card in school for taking any test on the computer. It has all the information on it, SS#, and amount of food money that was sent to the card as well as how much was used. Her debit works fine... her problem is it worked very well in Dallas a week ago and she spent way to much of her paycheck. lol

I have sent some money to her account so she should be fine until payday. This is why I think she is not getting a Navy CU account. I am on her account and can transfer money back and forth between our CU accounts.

The last thing I try to do is text her at night. Some nights I am sleeping when my head hits the pillow and I catch her in the AM.

Tobianne, my son had that too, but his card worked at the ATM's there.  On a lighter note, my son programed into my calendar on my "Haha, I love you mom".  So every night at 6 I get that message.  Sometimes the moms need to hear it still every night.  And there is always the "see ya, love ya, bye" before we hang up the phone.

Ok, someone help me here. Kayla calls and says mom, my card does not work here! I have to use cash at the galley. (little background) my kid goes to therapy at least one time a week, this is called retail, mall, spenders!!!! She left TX with not quite 150.00. Then she had to pay for the taxi and eat at the airport, oh forgot that she sent home the digital blues.

I said did they not tell you this???

Today they did. I had to sign papers to have the money "we do not see for food" put into my check and that will not be until next pay.....

What happened?? Should they have done this before they left for GP?

Now looking to send her some money, since I know she told me to really ask for some.

Any way did any one elses BEE go through this with out being told about it before?

This does not excuse the fact that she spends so much money and should have actually had money left to handle this.

I know right. It is a somewhat balanced meal.... ya got your veggies in there. She gets the healthier things, (well she use to) lol .

She is good this evening. Everyone is back. So now she can have someone to chat with. I am now sad. She called me 3 times today. That was before. lol now I will be happy to hear from her once a week, well that does not include the text messages. I get those every day. Mean ones if I forget to text her that I love her and good night. Ha who says they get to big to still need to hear that from momma everyday.

Kayla made it to GP safely last night. Got her room and today is sort of alone!! All of her friends from Sheppard are in FL for the weekend.

She says she found the subway and got something to eat. She has no idea where anything is at.... new base, new place to explore and learn.

She is a bit sad, she had to leave her "someone special" , I think this is life in the Navy. Although he will also be in PH in April. So this helps her.
